I should mention that this "long pre-vis" method is optimized for making the board game equivalent of zines while minimizing deadends. I can't afford to waste time & effort. If I don't publish several games a year, I don't eat. So I make small expressive things with shorter active design time.
I don't write a single rule or card, don't mock up a single playing piece, until I have a complete mental picture of the finished game - how all the parts work together, what it feels like, what arguments it makes. Then I make it look like that. Things can change/shift but I need that picture first.
Recently I saw some conversation about how different game designers ideate their nascent designs - how they approach their still forming ideas and turn them into games.
How do you get from idea to a prototype on the table?

It's so weird, there are a couple PBLs (Dearborn / some of Clark) but it's disconnected because of how stuff ends in one-way deadends and no E/W PBLs.
Can you imagine if LaSalle or Michigan had PBLs??? There's room for it, and people all over would envy it, but they gotta funnel cars to LSD...

I love these stories even more now that I live in a house with a laundry chute on the ground floor that reaches neither the 2nd floor nor the basement - it deadends half a floor in either direction.
We used to live in a townhouse from the 1980s, and one day, we hired a guy to come and clean out our dryer vent. Except, when he did the whole cleaning thing from the outside, nothing came out. There was no lint in the dryer vent, which is never a good sign. 1/
