"Abolish the Department of education"
"Deschooling"
"Ban those books"

Nein, ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, dass das in den nächsten Jahren schlimmer würde. Das wird prima.

Books I’m drawing in to frame my own thinking and we’ll read little bits from them to spark their thinking… here we go!

As a tutor I am immediately disinterested in working with any underage student whose parent is worried about their SAT score. It's a red flag to me. It tells me that the home environment likely prioritizes the wrong things in their education and hints I may spend more time deschooling than teaching.

As a child I hated school so much I decided to learn about why it existed and, lo and behold, discovered exactly this fact (Ivan Illich's "Deschooling Society," John Taylor Gatto's "An Underground History of American Education," among others) and it was the single most valuable part of my schooling.
The more you study history, the more you realize:

1. Stuff seen as ancient and intrinsic is at most two generations old
2. It was deliberately constructed
3. The people who constructed it were quite open about doing so

People fall for this in regard to a new (old material/ressource culture) as well. It's an unlearning thing and it needs a little longer attention span. Deschooling society please. We do not have to go down in this linear nonsense mindset, this is designed to be circular.
Social media can be a terrible place to discuss ideas, as the backlash against this entirely reasonable assertion shows.🧵
As an anthropologist, if the only thing I ever did all day was remind people that before the privatization and commodification of land humans had way more free time and peace of mind, it would still not do a dent in how deep this myth has burrowed into people's colonized minds like a parasite

I work in further education, you just cannot take the 'easy', basic foundational knowledge for granted. Because people already do think they do but they don't really know most of the time. That's why deschooling of society is a thing.

Worried about kids depending on ChatGPT to get through college? 20th-C's best thinkers Jane Jacobs & Ivan Illich would have seen this as an obvious next step. Jacobs' last book attacked credentialization, and Illich skewered higher learning.

Happy as this coming Thursday I'll have the opportunity to talk about one of my favourite topics. I will give a response to Sol Pérez Martínez lecture 'Deschooling Architecture: Undisciplined Knowledge Production.'

From Ivan Illich's 'Deschooling Society' to Colin Ward's USCs—a lot to discuss here!

A2 You need a decent ‘deschooling’ period not only to explain how the block system works but for students to experience it, with a very light-touch approach to assessment. #Lthechat
