#desegregated
Appreciate this Code Switch episode about public schools & the decision that Black (& Indigenous & etc) make: do I put my kid in a predominantly white school where they will get a better education but be the "only", or in a "bad" school with others who look like them?

Let’s stop pretending we desegregated schools : Code Switch

Maybe because Soul Train was born this day in 1971 I want to tell this story.

I was born in the Jim Crow south. When I began high school in 1972 it was just five years after local schools had desegregated.

The downtown Neiman Marcus flagship was one of the first major Dallas businesses that broke with these practices. In 1961, the company desegregated its Zodiac Room, a swanky lunch spot frequented by Dallas elites. Later, they welcomed Black shoppers to come and buy clothes without restrictions.

Yeah, but the rich and poor in Finland are both white. We're forgetting that little American tradition called racism. When we desegregated the schools white people moved to different neighborhoods.

To be fair, nuclear weapons development started under the raving lefty who created Social Security and were used by the woke madman who desegregated the US military. Heaven knows the current Republicans are trying to reverse both of those accomplishments!

Standards of living are massively better, we won WWII, ended malaria and many other disease in the U.S., education levels are much higher, we desegregated and had the civil rights movement, I guess he thinks that's shit.

Racial #segregation is far from a uniquely American evil, and on #ThisDayInHistory in 1953, #communist boxer #LenJohnson faced it in the #OldAbbeyTaphouse in #Manchester, England. Refused service for being #Black, he organized a 200-strong picket of the pub that desegregated it.

I grew up as a lower-middle class kid attending public schools in Michigan that had been desegregated via court order. They were a mixed bag—often dysfunctional, sometimes extraordinary, etc.

The state that gave us #Harry_S_Truman (The man from Independence) - a purported machine pol who lived by his fundamental principles, made a world-altering decision to end WWII, desegregated the military, & fired Douglas MacArthur; &, #Sen_Tom_Eagleton - a man who survived depression…

I found this gem (finally) from WHAS-TV Louisville, KY. The date is from 1975 and the SCOTUS then said ALL public schools have to be desegregated.

Forcefully desegregated American Baha'is and strongly encouraged interracial marriage.
Who's the real Prophet in all that?

When public pools began to be forcibly racially desegregated by law, white Americans just fully stopped going to them and instead built private pools with new middle class wealth. This kept private spaces segregated, but as a knock-on effect basically also barred lower classes at all

Motley was the first Black woman to argue a case before the US Supreme Court & to be appointed a federal judge.

She argued 10 landmark civil rights cases before #SCOTUS & won 9 of them. Her victories expanded protections for peaceful protesters, desegregated public spaces & more.

What a legacy!

The Catholic Church in Ohio I was raised in sent all their kids to Catholic school so they didn’t have to send their kids to
desegregated public schools, something else the Catholic Church has never addressed

I went to an all black school in 1968, the year MLK Jr. was assassinated. The schools desegregated in 1970. We thought we were making headway on racism in the US. It is sad that racism remains such a grinding detriment to our potential.

the "little rock nine" desegregated a school in little rock in 1957, three years before ruby. ruby bridges wasn't the very first child. this does not diminish what she did in any way.
