There's the whole "etic" and "emic" thing in perceptual dialectology, and its important for me to be objective.
But we can look at the orthography used by writers like Charles Murray and John C Milne from the 1900s and compare it to contemporary poets in the central region.

finally i will suggest that dipping a toe into global dialectology for any language that is spoken in a lot of different ways like english or spanish (i’m less familiar with other examples personally, so maybe i’m just from a place) reveals a lot of beauty in holding down yours & respecting others’

Sure, but that’s more at the level of sociolinguistics and dialectology rather than syntax and whatnot. Linguists definitely study linguistic variation and social attitudes towards those variants.

Ahhh nice! My degree was linguistics, but we had the option to focus on one language if we wanted and for me that was Spanish. But I loved the phonetics and dialectology aspects of it

certain dialects have a lot of catalan/valencian cognates, like a lot of weird ways to say stuff in catalan generally sounds like it COULD be almost castilian, like entrepans for sandwich, but if it hasn’t been too long since dialectology i’m thinking “vegano” is probably easier in madrid

Working on my syllabus for undergrad sociolinguistics, and I am genuinely jealous of the students, because they get to learn about so many cool things for the first time. Perceptual dialectology! Conversational style! Language planning! Multicultural London English!
