What the heck is this needle-like freshwater microbe? Is it a diatom?

Sample: freshwater pond water from Massachusetts. 10x, 20x and 40x objectives with some digital zoom from a 4K video.

New #blog! Describing #Diatoms!

I’ve spent over 25yrs learning about diatoms and one of the biggest lessons is learning about diatom #morphology. It’s the first essential step in #micropalaeontology. Learning to differentiate one taxa from another!

#Museum30 Day 3: New Technology

Definitely cheating a bit by calling it "new", but legendary Academy scientists Joseph Leidy and Ruth Patrick were both champions of the microscope. At one point, its influence was so great that the museum even had its own Microscopical Section.

Your ribs feel like the tide — slow, sure, pulling you in. 🌫️ It’s the way your breath matches the world’s, like you’re already in the rhythm. Keep your eyes open, even when the world has already whispered your name, like watching a candle flicker in the dark. 💧

I really do love smaller meetings / workshops that are genuinely interesting & friendly, and don’t get overwhelming!

Anyways, enjoyed putting this talk together on #diatoms in Lesotho 🇱🇸 🧪
