Up in Northern Moldova today at the magnificent Soroca Castle. 15thC, it protected a crossing over the Dneister River. That’s a thankfully peaceful looking Ukraine on the other side.

When Russia stole the land between the Prut and Dneister rivers, that created a great big wound in the Romanian culture.

Reunification would create a chance to heal that wound.

But, it carries with it continued Russian influence in the form of citizens identifying as Russians.

Around 1820, the Russian Empire had a war with the Ottomans, winning that war, and as spoils the Russian Empire stole the land between the Prut and Dneister Rivers.

This was 1/2 the Principality of Moldova. The remaining part stretched to the Carpathian Mountains.

There's a Balkan state story unfolding at the moment. Transnistria is a ribbon of land 10 miles wide and 200 miles long (roughly) on the eastern bank of the Dneister River. Its been disputed for ~700 years and may or may not be part of Moldova or Ukraine. It leans eastwards to Russia instead of
