Based on a convo that I had where I was talking about how I'd love to make a Felix the Cat comic since Felix is public domain, but @bakertoons.com pointed out that the Magic Bag wasn't public domain. So @timkangaroo.bsky.social came up with the wonderful legal biding replacement.

relatedly there's a strong argument that, even if you cannot RUN the models on your machine at home, any model that is based on fair use training and on the public domain should, itself, be in principle public domain and i'd like to see people making THAT argument instead of "sand is evil"
If you're a person who thinks "billionaires are evil -> billionaires own big tech -> frontier labs dominate the LLM space and are owned by billionaires -> LLMs is evil" then I am sympathetic to it. However the correct prescription is not to destroy LLM technology but to expropriate it.
Marx isn't just mildly disagreeing with the Luddites, he's saying their machine-breaking actively gave reactionary governments a pretext for repression. It was strategically counterproductive on top of being analytically wrong.

I just realized the original character of Conan will be public domain in a year and a half, which is likely why we are getting a new movie based on the more copyrighted later books not written by Howard.

I know the headline is scary, but this is a ruling based on the filing order of a claim that's about 1% of what Alex Jones owes, and it reaffirms his guilt. We're hoping it'll unstick a logjam that's been holding up collection on the other 99%, including the eventual InfoWars domain name takeover.

Domain was seized by the US by OFAC in April 2013, left to expire in 2017. Re-registered by the Bangladesh based "Marinegov" group in September 2025.
