One of many things that radicalized me on public transit was watching misdemeanor court docket days where 80% of cases are DUIs, and many of the people in on post-DUI DWLS charges simply ignored their license suspensions and kept driving because... wtf else are you gonna do? Walk 2hrs to the bus?

I used to work in a Florida PD's office, and it was appalling. They put you on a payment plan that's nonnegotiable and if you fail to pay, they suspend your license. Frequently people came back through because they couldn't make payments but drove anyway to get to work only to get a DWLS. No way out

We (Democrats and other liberals especially) are responsible for the massive increase in police funding that's occurred in our cities. We are responsible for the criminalization of poverty. Until recently the most charged misdemeanor in washington state was DWLS 3. Driving while license suspended 3

New preprint on our harmonised wind dataset from 6 doppler wind lidars operated along a transect through Paris, France. This data supports urban weather and climate modeling in multiple @erc.europa.eu, @wmo-global.bsky.social, @icos-ri.eu and @horizoneu.bsky.social projects: doi.org/10.5194/essd...
Six Doppler Wind LIDARS (DWLs) operated across Paris concurrently are used to retrieve horizontal wind speed and direction through the ABL at 18–25 m vertical and 1–60 min temporal resolution. The six DWLs were deployed in a multi-institutional effort along a 40 km transect through the centre of Paris (France) in 2023 - 2024.

Cell Regen Research | BayesPrism-DWLS enables integrated inference of cell-type proportions and gene expression from bulk RNA-seq and spatial data!
#StemCells #Transcriptomics
🔗 Reveal cell-type-specific programs missed by conventional analysis: doi.org/10.1186/s136...
Schematic illustration of the benchmarking workflow and the BayesPrism-DWLS framework. Public scRNA-seq and bulk RNA-seq datasets from multiple tissues were used to systematically benchmark cell-type proportion and gene expression deconvolution methods. Performance was evaluated using Pearson correlation, RMSE, cosine similarity, and Bray–Curtis dissimilarity, together with additional experimental validation. Based on these results, the BayesPrism-DWLS framework was developed to infer cell-type proportions and cell-type-specific gene expression from bulk RNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics data. Two birds with one stone for this one, wanted to try pixel art and an exhibit where the statue is incomplete but a silhouette outlines the rest of the body

I could always do pixel art, just never tried it for asfr until now, but seeing the work of DWLS inspired me

I only went before a grand jury once, for a felony driving while license suspended. Guy had, like, sixteen prior convictions for DWLS and as they read each prior aloud the people on the grand jury started looking around like, “WTF, srsly?”

Oh, he was DWI for good measure.

Peer Referral Pathways and 6-Month Outcomes in a Tirzepatide-Supported Digital Weight Loss Service: Retrospective Cohort Study
In a retrospective analysis of 34,449 adults using an unsubsidized, tirzepatide-supported digital weight loss service (DWLS) in Australia, patients entering via peer referral showed higher 6-month program adherence and greater percentage weight loss than propensity score–matched nonreferred patients, suggesting that peer referral pathways may support retention and effectiveness in medicated obesity care.

They can be very accurate (see Scaden in our benchmarking for instance), although one should consider the associated data size and computational burden. On the other hand, simpler models like DWLS also showed very robust performance in different settings, see doi.org/10.1101/2024...

Surface phytoplankton densities assert a control function on surface heating of the oceans which can trigger a reaction in the atmosphere

Shows a gigantic phytoplankton bloom south of Madagascar Surface phytoplankton densities assert a control function on surface heating of the oceans which can trigger a reaction in the atmosphere Found a nice compilation on this highly important subject: The vertical distribution of solar heating is sensitive to the amount of absorptive material in the water, and in the open ocean where phytoplankton and their derivatives are the primary absorbing constituents (“case I waters”), the spectral absorption has been empirically shown to follow a robust power-law relationship to the chlorophyll concentration Manizza et al. (2005) found that modification of light penetration by phytoplankton biomass amplified the seasonal cycles of temperature, mixed layer depth, and sea ice cover by 10%, and these physical changes caused increases in phytoplankton biomass, a positive feedback that further amplified the physical perturbations It has been suggested that phytoplankton-induced SST variability may modify the strength of the Hadley and Walker circulations, steer tropical cyclones away from the equator, slow the meridional overturning circulation, and perhaps even play a role in Arctic Amplification (1/2) Shows the high chlorophyll region across the equatorial Pacific where nutrients are pulled upwards to the surface as water at the surface moves poleward. The formation and evolution of diurnal warm layers (DWLs), which span broad areas of the tropical oceans, is especially sensitive to variability in the vertical distribution of solar heating. These thin, stratified layers of warm surface water are a systematic feature of the equatorial Indian Ocean during the quiescent phase of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) as well as the West Pacific Warm Pool from which the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) originates. Tantalizing evidence has been mounting for a possible coupling between phytoplankton and both the MJO and ENSO, in which wind bursts upwell nutrients and stimulate phytoplankton blooms, which subsequently trap solar radiation near the surface, increasing SST and thereby atmospheric convection during the quiescent phases of these oscillatory climate modes The tropical oceans also experience substantial precipitation, leaving stable surface layers of freshwater that can persist through periods of clear skies and intense solar heating (Shackelford et al., 2024; Thompson et al., 2019). In order to understand the role—and potential bio-physical feedbacks—of these stratified surface layers in the tropical climate system, the solar heating profile must be accurately represented over a vertical scale of just a few meters. Yet most global models rely on simple parameterizations that are known to be inaccurate in the upper meters as their topmost ocean layer is generally ≥10 m thick. We therefore seek to build upon past work in order to develop a bio-physical parameterization of comparable simplicity that can be relied upon throughout cases of near-surface open ocean stratification "An Improved Bio-Physical Parameterization for Ocean Radiant Heating in Conditions of Near-Surface Stratification"; https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2024JC021049 Different years in the North Sea with huge differences in surface blooms The oceans get greener over most of there area - controversial discussed as wavelengths are important to measure a signal.
