Saying "emotos pose less danger to other road users than cars do" isn't minimising the danger of emotos.

If you think it is, it's because you're minimising the danger of cars & can't countenance any challenge to that so "you're minimising the danger of emotos" is the only way it can fit together.

There needs to be a concerted effort to refer to these as Emotos and not Ebikes
June 7, 2025 at 12:29 AM
And if you think that by saying this I'm minimising the risks posed & harms caused by emotos, go back to the start of the thread & read it again but this time use the risks posed & harms caused by emotos as your fixed point & see where that takes you with the risks posed & harms caused by cars.

Those are emotos, not ebikes

neither of the pictured emotos have pedals.
Ebike panic from the New Brighton police on Facebook. Without any info about wattage or speeds there's no way to know if these specific bikes are illegal. I fear cops who don't care to learn the specifics of the emoto law will start confiscating perfectly legal bikes from kids (esp youth of color).

Fuk that re ebike licenses.

Support regulations and licenses for emotos, but ebike license for all classes of e-bikes is fukt up.
New E-bike Requirements Effective July 2026

NJ is requiring E-bikes to be registered and insured, starting in July.
We can help with the insurance.

This bike what ever it’s called is definitely a toy version of the things we cal EMotos. Probably as much power as a regular ebike

They're not motor vehicles. They're bikes.

Unless you're referring to things like Surons, which are not ebikes. They're electric motorbikes, or emotos for short.

If your intervention to reduce risk to pedestrians from ebikes, emotos, scooters or any other micromobility results in micromobility journeys being replaced by car journeys, it's very unlikely to reduce overall risk to pedestrians.
If someone is concerned about the risk to pedestrians from e-bikes, e-motos, and scooters, but doesn't support taking away space from cars to build safer micro-mobility infrastructure then I would question their commitment to safety

I think this is part of the conflation of two very different vehicles, pedal assist e-bikes (12-18mph) than eMotos (40+ mph), with very different consequences in the event of impact

*while also having virtually zero understanding of what proper ebikes are, how emotos are different, and that cheap, unregulated electric bikes are what many parents are buying their children.

So, you search on an "ebike" that you saw. That personalized search then hides the legal ones and shows you an alternate universe of only high powered illegal emotos. The market share of illegal emotos grows. Then everyone in your city screams about ebikes.

These god damned emotos!!!

Individuals making a distinction between ebikes and emotos is a good idea but will make no impact on media reporting because their conflation of the two is motivated, not a result of clumsy writing or ignorance.

I'd still much rather people ride emotos than drive monster trucks and SUVs
March 10, 2026 at 4:14 PM
These people need advisors who actually know what they're talking about, so we can get a distinction between ebikes and emotos
January 19, 2026 at 6:04 PM
Yeah yeah, these were probably emotos and yes they have been muddying the waters of the true ebike world for a while now, but that doesn't take away from this all too common car brained take.

As expected, the usual bad faith actors are using this incident to argue against all forms of electric mobility, including pedal assist bikes. The state needs to ban emotos and overly powerful scooters ASAP, in part to defang these cranks.

This is why I will always (obnoxiously) defend the dipshits on emotos.

They're gonna drive like shit regardless, I'd rather they have some skin in the game & also not contribute to climate collapse.

I'd rather be hit by 10 emotos than live through climate collapse.

Emotos need to be regulated into motorcycles. I think it's fantastic that the stinky noise machines are getting replaced by battery-powered death traps, but they belong on roads, separated from vulnerable road users.

Vestigial pedals should not count.

Most of the crashes in LA region with kids are not ebikes, they are emotos. We have strong laws that distinguish between them, the media just reports them wrongly. What's truly out of control in LA are drivers. They kill more people than murderers.
