It's believed that this bright blue color has strong antioxidant properties typical of echinoderm carotenoids, but it may also be an aposematic warning.

Blue stars produce 'asterosaponins' which aren't harmful to humans but taste bad & make the star's tissues hard to swallow.
Blue Linckia (Linckia laevigata)
Linckia laevigata (sometimes called the 'blue Linckia' or blue star) is a species of sea star (commonly known as a starfish) in the shallow waters of tropical Indo-Pacific (a biogeographic region of t...

Quark: One time I bought Keiko a leather bracelet and she accused me of being insensitive to Echinoderm feelings.

Always a pleasure to have @chiahsinhsu.bsky.social visit the @nhm-london.bsky.social Fossil Echinoderm collections! For his PhD Chia-Hsin is studying evolutionary change in #Cretaceous echinoids from the chalk, some of which (like Hagenowia) exhibit 'extreme' morphologies.

In October 18, 2006, an unsuspecting sea snail would take a bite out of fast food and end up having a bizarre dream involving everyone's favorite porifera, echinoderm, and copepod.

Happy 20th anniversary, CftKK!

Absolutely unacceptable behavior of museums not fulfilling their mission. And not just in vert paleo! I've unfortunately encountered situations in echinoderm paleo where access to certain type specimens was similarly restricted. The story about that dinosaur holotype being sold is next level awful

We have a cool PhD project on echinoderm fossils and genome architecture evolutions with @imranrahman.bsky.social Feel free to drop a line to inquire!

Who knew sea urchins were this organized? How’d they find our flyer? Where’d they get a printer? And all those tube feet yet not ONE could hit spell check?

Come see what’s got them so “disgusteng.” Ocean Hoptimism, Oct 22, 7–8 PM, Faction Brewing, Alameda. Free. Urchin disapproved.

I'm worried people will think this is just a fluke of photography.

Like, here's a photo of Hippasteria muscipula from Okeanos Explorer off the coast of Hawaii in 2015.

This echinoderm has back.
Pixar has expressed interest.
It works the glutes.

"The argument is advanced here that examples of #tagmosis are not hard to find among echinoderms, a fourth major group of metameric animals; but the degree of tagmosis is weak in most cases. "
