Lay Sion Ng on the Natural World in The Sun Also Rises
In this episode, we sit down with scholar Lay Sion Ng for a wide-ranging conversation about Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises.Ng, the author of Hemingway, Ecology and Culture: Re-reading Hemingway in the Anthropocene, helps us understand how Hemingway can be read as one of the great writers of anthropogenic damage — chronicling how war, industrial modernity, and environmental destruction are entangled with bodily and spiritual trauma. Drawing on ecocriticism, disability studies, and phenomenology, Ng traces how Jake Barnes's recovery unfolds in relation to the natural world across four settings (Bayonne, Burguete, Pamplona, and San Sebastián). Our conversation also grapples with the ethics of bullfighting, the contrast between Paris and Spain as ecological landscapes, and how Hemingway's engagement with the natural world evolved (or didn't) across his career. As with the rest of our episodes on The Sun Also Rises, we have supplemented our conversation with an excerpt from the audio book of The Sun Also Rises, performed by William Hurt. Thanks to Simon and Schuster for their partnership.Thank you for listening to One True Podcast! a lot of stuff that passes as medieval "posthumanism" is really very much part of ecocriticism and new materialism (and its various schools). There's LOT of critical animal theory informed medieval cultural studies. But it's often not especially posthuman...
