John Carpenter convinced Donald Pleasance to take the role as the President in EFNY by pitching him a backstory for the character that involved him being the illegitimate love child of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.
Where's @mattfnwallace.bsky.social ? I feel like if anyone has more fun facts about the Escape From... films it would be he.

My favorite oddbalnfact also comes from this movie:

The outfit Snake is wearing at the start of the film isn't a recreation of his Escape From New Yoek outfit - it IS his EFNY outfit.

It still fit, and he brought it to set to wear, but they proceeded with the new outfit anyway.

I think EFLA is actually successful as a parody of the original film and demonstrates just how both Kurt Russell and John Carpenter had gone from young and hungry and edgy to so jaded they needed to lampoon the Hollywood mainstream they were a part of. (EFNY remains a classic.) 🔥

I totally agree. Loved the references to EFNY and the whole new book.

Efny

I actually put EFNY, The Thing and BTiLC on the same pedestal. 3 points of perfection between Carpenter and Russell.
October 5, 2026 at 12:45 AM
BTiLC definitely has horror elements to it. It's also my all-time favorite movie so yeah, recommended.

I also like EfNY/LA (Especially Escape from LA! Our boy Bruce Campbell has a good scene!) but they're pretty straightforward sci-fi (ish) action flicks.

How have I never seen Escape From New York

This is outstanding 😂

My friend Lars had the EFNY board game, which we would play all the time

I guess I was only 10

I’ve never been part of the EFNY fan club any more than Romero’s DoTD, so I’m sure Zack’s take will similarly become my preferred one.

Not anti remake or anti EFNY remake, but fuck no to this with him at the helm at this point.
September 18, 2026 at 4:15 AM
Disagree.

The movie is great.

It's no dumber than EFNY, which is pretty damn dumb!!

I did a one-and-one at the Scottie's on 21st and Escape From New York a few months ago. It held up well in most respects, but that was one of my biggest qualms: If I could get EFNY cheese and sauce on Scottie's crust... that may well be the best New York-style slice in town.

I saw EFNY as a high school student, part of my film analysis unit; it was hilarious!

August

The Long Hot Summer (1958)
Down By Law (1986)
Escape From New York (1981)

Man, Welles is every pork product in TLHS. But Newman/Woodward are fire. Weird movie. DbL, early Jarmusch that did not land with me. EFNY, hell yeah. Cool.

If we can't do EFNY I'm happy to go with Big Trouble in Little China if it makes it easier.

Every time I'm in the neighborhood, I say "this is the time I don't go to Escape From New York for pizza." If competitors are going to close for two days, including a weekend day, they're making the decision really easy for both me and Cinema 21. I can see why EFNY has no off days.
August 18, 2026 at 2:54 PM
i mean, the script wasn’t there, but efny was made on a shoestring in st. louis - efla just feels like he didn’t care. it’s not a very rigorous piece of work, caveats taken into account. snake’s nihilism makes a lot more sense to me in the current political environment. no need for a remake.
August 14, 2026 at 4:51 PM
EFNY does have an extended appearance from Ox Baker (as "Slag") in its favor.
January 19, 2025 at 3:30 AM
Point Break, Road House, The Crow, Robocop... these had very clear points to make, whereas the remakes were just soulless and quickly forgotten.

This is my fear for Highlander, because it's not "John Wick with swords." It's not just action.

And now I share the same fear for EFNY.

How about reimagining. If it was shitty the first time it was a bad idea and we dont need it reimagined. If it was great (like EFNY) you will only make a shifter version
June 1, 2026 at 11:40 PM
Nahhh this is damn solid rankings. Obviously you’d get second looks on how low Halloween & EFNY are but all in a it’s pretty darn good.
October 24, 2025 at 2:37 PM
That EFNY thoooooo!!!!!
November 21, 2024 at 9:33 PM
EFNY is a bit thin and arguably less than the sum of its parts, but each of those parts (stacked cast, memorable characters, imaginative premise, iconic score) are why it’s so well remembered.
January 19, 2025 at 11:07 AM
You've hit the nail on the head. EfNY sums up the grit and feelings spilling over from the 70s. It's unfiltered. EfLA is naff by comparison. Plissken destroying the 'peace' tape summits all up. Plus he obviously had no sellotape to put over the anti-piracy devices!
