The crane illustration in my collage is ‘Cloisonne, crane’, a chromolithograph published by L. Prang & Co. between 1861 and 1897. The title refers to the decorative cloisonné style it imitates, with bold outlines and flat areas of colour inspired by enamelwork. Artist unknown.

Enamel, not porcelain. They did a lot of enamelwork, and it may be one reason this survived, since jewelry was constantly being remade, the stones & metal reused.

The pinkish stone might be a spinel.

I do enamelwork, but since I sell it, I'm not sure it counts as a hobby. Baking, which I used to do professionally. Gardening, hiking with my dogs. Tai chi. Occasional sewing/cussing.

photograph of an illumined manuscript at the brooklyn museum. Books of Hours are Christian prayer books (also called manuscripts, from the Latin for "written by hand" that wealthy laypeople used for their daily personal devotions. Small enough to be easily carried, they could include prayers, psalms, calendars, and lists of saints' days. They often feature painted biblical scenes with intricate border designs meant to enrich divine contemplation. Books with images and decorative elements highlighted with gold (usually gold powder mixed with glue) are known as "Illuminated manuscripts." This illumination depicts Saint Mark writing his gospel, accompanied by a lion, his symbol. The video projection demonstrates how gold illumination enhanced the experience of reading a book. Each turn of the page glistens with the reveal of a new image or design. Illuminated manuscripts were crafted from parchment or vellum, animal skin (typically calf) that has been cleaned, stretched, and trimmed. To address vellum's porosity, a red lead undercoat was applied as a barrier before it was painted with the gold-glue mixture. The use of red lead, which is flexible like vellum, contrasts with the more rigid red clay bole or lacquer typically used under gold in gold-ground painting or gilded wood sculpture. Because gold leaf and gold paint are slightly translucent, the red undercoat also helps to enrich the color of the gold. Through the un interplay of vellum, lead, and gold, illuminat manuscripts can be seen as the medieval equivalent of moving images. gilded lorginette (opera glasses) at the Brooklyn Museum. Poesy rings are engraved with secret messages, such as a poem or loving phrase. They were typically made of gold to ref the importance of the bond or messag they conveyed. Inscriptions were usually written in French, Latin, or English; this one reads, "Our Contract was Heaven's Act." a rare and superb early 20th century Chinese export gilt silver enamel and bezel-set turquoise cabochons Koi fish in pond and waves design lidded bowl. An exquisite example of very fine Chinese silver and enamelwork! Chinese export silver items were often made in multiples, and no doubt there was more than one of this item made originally, but it is the first that I have seen in my career. This bowl features three-dimensional vignettes of Koi fish in ponds with green plants. The silver has been hand-hammered repousse to make the fish three-dimensional, and then the multi-colored enamel was fired over the silver. In between the scenes of goldfish there are two areas of filigree laid over a solid silver backing and with groups of bezel-set Tibetan turquoise cabochons in a star formation. Around the base is a design of cresting waves with blue dots above. This same design is repeated on the lid with the innermost dots white, some are graduating half white and half blue (to represent seafoam) and the outermost dots are blue, all around a central large bezel-set turquoise cabochon finial with engraved decorations. In Chinese culture, the koi carp represents fame, family harmony and wealth in Chinese culture. It is a feng shui favourite, symbolising abundance as well as perseverance and strength, and has a mythical potential to transform into a dragon.All in all the decorations on this bowl no doubt signify an auspicious design meant to convey peace, relaxation, harmony, love, and family life, as Chinese works of art so often do. The finial looks like it might have been very very slightly pushed in from a previous mishap, but not at all noticeable when on display. The bowl measures 5-1/2" tall by 6-3/8" diameter, and weighs 783.6 grams or over 25 troy ounces total. Marked "Silver" at bottom as shown. Excellent vintage condition

one of three works by Virgil Cantini available in my store - a rare and lovely vintage 1960s handmade copper enamel modernist Flowers design brooch by American enamelist/sculptor Virgil Cantini of Pittsburgh, PA. An outstanding example of his enamelwork, and his jewelry is exceedingly rare! Here's a short bio of the artist that I found online: ------------- 
Virgil David Cantini (February 28, 1919 – May 2, 2009) was an American enamelist, sculptor and educator. He was well known for innovation with enamel and steel and received both local and national recognition for his work, including honorary awards, competitive prizes and commissions, along with a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1957. Cantini long served as a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, where he helped to create the Department of Studio Arts. A longtime resident of the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cantini died on May 2, 2009 at the age of 90. Today, many of his large scale works are on display throughout the city of Pittsburgh.

Marked "Cantini" at back in the counter-enamel as shown. One of several pieces I have by this artist available in my shop right now - an extremely rare and wonderful miniature work of copper enamel art by famed California silversmith/enamelist James Parker of San Diego, California. Parker (1914-1987 USA) was first inspired to create modernist jewelry in 1939 on visiting the Georg Jensen shop in London and viewing some of their more sculptural and spare creations, and by the 1950s he was widely lauded for his original and creative jewelry designs that often included enamel. He was a member of the Allied Craftsmen of San Diego, and later of the Enamel Guild as well, and showed his work in several shows each year in the San Diego area, and also at national-level shows including the California Design exhibitions in Pasadena and at Craftsmanship in a Changing World, the inaugural exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in NYC in 1956 by the American Craft Council. This particular artwork is dated 1969 and has a dedication by the artist "For Peggy for Oct 8, 1969" and is signed on the back papers "J. Parker". This enamel artwork reminds me of disparate sources including the 'flowers' series by Andy Warhol from earlier in the 1960s, and of Japanese art particularly how the flowers and stems are outlined in black for more contrast from the background. This effect was achieved by cutting through the enamel to the copper below, and then patinating the copper black. A small but quite attractive artwork by this titan of the California enamel art scene of the 1950s and 60s! Measures 2-3/4" wide by 1-5/8" tall, and the frame measures 3-3/4" wide by 2-5/8" tall at the outside edges. Signed by the artist on the back papers. One of several works I have by this enamel artist in my shop right now - a lovely vintage 1950s 60s handmade copper enamel modernist Floral design plate/artwork by Annemarie Davidson (1920-2012, USA) of Sierra Madre, California. Absolutely gorgeous, colorful, and yet stylized and utterly modernist image of vibrant flowers in various stages of bloom! This piece reminds me so much of the Flowers series by Andy Warhol from the same era, and also another enamel piece that I have for sale currently by James Parker, also of California. Davidson was born in Germany, but moved to the US with her family, and later studied with prominent American enamelist Doris Hall and later with Curtis Tann in the 1950s, and is considered to be in the first rank of American enamel artists of the 20th century. Very attractive design and in such vibrant colors by Davidson, and in immaculate condition! Measures 7.75" diameter by about 1" high at rim, and weighs about a pound prior to packing. Marked at back with her signature in the enamel, and an original sticker as shown in my photos. Excellent vintage condition with just fine light wear from display but no loss or damage to the enamel whatsoever as shown.
