Remember this one?

“Humans aren’t very efficient movers—until you put us on a bicycle, when we become some of the most energy-efficient land travelers in the animal kingdom.”

The most efficient travellers are us on bikes.

Housing the homeless. Not sheltering the homeless & certainly not forcibly relocating them.

Construct low cost, energy efficient housing, near reliable resources, not in some food desert. Additionally, prodvide the housed with trained medical assistance & counselors. Not the cops. Never the cops.
What luxurious public good would you like to see if we got our cash back from these demons?

1) PBS becomes a free prestige streaming network like HBO or Apple.

2) Each state gets its own federally funded newspaper (and the government cannot control the contents). Stipend determined by population.

This is such a wild generational leap in gpu technology that I've barely heard of. Founder was at an event last night and they got units in data centers.

🚨 BLADES ON THE MOVE 🚨

At one of our Octopus Energy Generation sites in rural France, we’re “repowering” old turbines by replacing them with more efficient, modern and bigger turbines. And huge blades = HUGE LOGISTICS to get these bad boys up and running.

Also if it was more energy efficient

This summer I’ll have adequate cooling (I do need to get a pedestal fan to blow the cool air into the bedroom) all my neighbours were given cooling too, but I’m also very aware so many people in poverty don’t have access to safe secure energy efficient housing. Climate change means more extreme

* has an entire chapter on making it easier to build nationwide transportation infrastructure without mentioning the concept of federalism

* spends time on the fact that his house is marked for historical preservation and therefore can't easily add solar panels or energy efficient windows

Yes, creating one with opt in policies for contributors to training data, that is energy efficient, and open source, and credits where it is getting information from reliably. I would be OK with that existing for things like maths literature search.
Very interested in doing anything I can to make AI work for mathematicians in the way that THEY need it to work, though very unclear on how to do this. It's a moral/ethical minefield, but we're in it, and I want to help.

The pro-lobby says it will make processes more efficient. If the programs they ran were more efficient they wouldn't use as much energy.
Why is BIG tech spending vast amounts of energy checking up on every website 1000s of times a day!

This is a very important point. Immutable thermodynamic laws mean that burning stuff to make heat energy and then turn that into something useful is unavoidably inefficient.

But an electric motor can be 97% efficient...
“We don’t need to replace waste,” as I told the FT today.

Electrifying doesn’t just change the fuel, it shrinks the amount of energy you need.

Our forthcoming paper finds the same useful energy with roughly half the primary energy.

I call it Electrofficiency.

they are not particularly efficient, diesel is somewhat more efficient, but internal combustion loses most of its energy to noise and heat
November 2, 2026 at 2:14 PM
More efficient software, energy systems like solar and wind on site, rooftop water collection,...if only we had some intelligence working FOR US rather against us

But they are highly efficient renewable energy and Trump is also afraid of them!

The COA also doesn't think much of the City's tacked on electrical code arguments, even finding that the City cited to parts of the electrical code which do not apply in Minnesota.

as much as I reskeeted most of this thread, I want to emphasize: even if the power consumption & GHG emissions of one query are as trivial as this article wants you to believe, training the models to respond to those queries is *extremely* energy intensive

if they're that efficient, why are they…
I was going to just ignore this one but seeing that it's cowritten by a ***sustainability academic*** at a university, telling this stuff *to students* (!!) I gotta go through each of the misrepresentations, errors and big-tech talking point / greenwashing tropes here:

The Democrats from Carter to Biden gave us a path forward. Carbon-free and fuel-free energy generation. Transmission, distribution and storage has become safer and more efficient. We could replace a car culture with a safer better car culture. With each car as a storage device.

This is what really gets me. I design building HVAC systems for a living (though I've never done a data center), I personally work hard to design buildings with nice efficient conditioning... only for the AI craze to come along and undo all our work, gobble up energy and not even do anything useful.
