What's actually happening here is that human societies are extremely complex, unpredictable systems that we lack the ability to model comprehensively. In short, foreign policy is really hard.
An informed, educated, careful decision-maker makes fewer errors, not no errors.

There's a massive category error problem where people expect the social sciences and humanities to work like the natural sciences, where being an expert means you are extremely unlikely to make terrible *practical* mistakes (unless due to carelessness). A chem PhD won't make a basic chem mistake...
Decades and decades of a national policy and zeitgeist that amounts to 'nobody needs to care about social studies' and we're now in an unwinnable war with a foreign country whose culture and leadership we did not understand based around geography we ignored. 🤷♂️
