Except, this is not breaking news. We have known this estimated figure since last year! But as is the MO for Israel, they will only admit this death toll as a “mistake” or “collateral damage of war” after a series of denials, deflections, and justifications. Just long enough for people’s rage to have dampened.

Excuse a brief aside on the target variable: SPM traditionally uses multi-year RAPM, since it's divorced from counting stats and it provides a relatively more stable estimate of lineup-based impact.

For this SPM model, though, I used prior-informed, 1-Year RAPM as the target variable.

even with a lifelong expertise in it, everytime you estimate anything off the top of your head you're still filtering the inaccurate monkey-brain intuition through that knowledge.

I had it at "more prevalent than consensus-1 but not sure if consensus-2 overestimates it", but the degree of overlap between long COVID and MCAS symptoms (and the wide differences in how fast people recover from COVID) is really pushing me more towards "maybe the consensus-2 estimate is closer"!

Satellite Images Reveal 390 Million Year Old Impact Crater Outside Rawlins, Local Man Says He Has Been Dumping Tires There Since 1998 RAWLINS, Wyo. - A massive geological formation outside Rawlins has been identified as a roughly 390-million-year-old meteor impact crater after researchers noticed an unusual circular feature while reviewing satellite imagery of south-central Wyoming. Researchers estimate the original meteor may have measured several hundred feet across and struck the region with enough force to leave a geological scar still visible hundreds of millions of years later. A team sent to examine the site said the crater remained surprisingly well preserved considering its age. The bottom, however, was not. Researchers discovered 47 tires, three washing machines, a refrigerator, several pieces of fencing and what appears to be most of a 1994 Ford Ranger scattered throughout the depression. Local resident Dale Mercer, 63, told researchers his family has used the area to dispose of unwanted tires and equipment since approximately 1998. “Nobody told us it was a meteor crater,” Mercer said. “We just thought it was a really convenient hole.” Researchers have asked residents to stop adding material to the site while geological testing continues. Mercer said he understands. He would, however, like researchers to let him know before they leave because one of the tires near the eastern edge is still pretty good.

In a study published on Monday in the Lancet Oncology, researchers estimate that infections were responsible for approximately 2.3 million cancer cases, or about 12 percent of diagnoses, worldwide in 2024. Helicobacter pylori bacteria and human papillomavirus (HPV) combined accounted for more than an estimated 1.5 million cancer cases, the analysis found. An estimated 360,000 cancer cases were linked to hepatitis B infections, and 260,000 cases were caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Graphic shows a series of pie charts, each representing one type of cancer, scaled according to how many new cases of that cancer were diagnosed in 2024. Colored areas of the pie charts indicate how many of those cases were associated with infections, with each infection shown in a different color.
