Two significant ecosystem developments landed Monday. Aztec relaunched its zk.money privacy wallet on its Ethereum Layer 2, a move that revives one of the more closely watched privacy infrastructure projects and raises fresh questions about regulatory tolerance for on-chain anonymity tools in the current enforcement climate. Separately, Bitwise launched the first US spot NEAR ETF with staking rewards attached, extending the spot ETF product set beyond Bitcoin and Ethereum. That structure, which bundles yield with price exposure, could draw attention from yield-seeking institutional allocators and sets a precedent for staking-integrated crypto ETFs in the US market.

Moonwell accrues almost $3.7 million of bad debt after oracle malfunction The Moonwell lending protocol, built on the Base Ethereum L2, wound up with $3.7 million in bad debt after an attacker took advantage of an oracle malfunction that caused the price of wrsETH to be massively inflated. The Chainlink oracle used by the project erroneously reported that a single wrsETH token (Kelp DAO's wrapped restaked ETH) was priced at around 1.65 million ETH (~$5.8 billion). Within 30 seconds of the oracle reporting bad data, an attacker took advantage of the error to borrow huge amounts of tokens, which they then swapped to other tokens to cash out. Ultimately the attacker profited around 295 ETH (~$1 million), but the protocol was saddled with significantly more bad debt that the team will now have to grapple with.

Another solution is to encourage the use of ETH, through the second layers (L2), with a percentage of the fees. "This could be done by burning a portion of the fees, permanently staking, and donating the proceeds to the public goods of the Ethereum ecosystem," Buterin wrote.
