In the 1930s, the Museum moved to South Kensington from its home in Jermyn Street, London. One of the architects of the new building was Sir Richard Allinson, who had also designed the Science Museum. The Museum was re-opened in its new Exhibition Road location on 3 July 1935.

Today, visitors to our central Hintze Hall are greeted by the wonder of a real blue whale skeleton, a female, named Hope.

But what would visitors in 1901 have seen in this same location, then called the Central Hall?

Why did place names on a map of Canada matter to geographers in London?

In the 1880s, a new railroad connected eastern Canada to British Columbia. As the railway expanded, Indigenous place names were added to official maps - including this 1886 map - which became a point of contention at the RGS.

With newspapers struggling to publish because of the strike, the Government launched its own paper - The British Gazette. It was a mix of news & #propaganda & edited by Winston Churchill. The edition shown & the other newspapers come from Edith Olivier's #archive. (WSHC 982/227)

#OTD 12 May the UK's 9-day #GeneralStrike1926 came to an end. It was also the day the weekly Salisbury & Winchester Journal published its first daily news bulletin. National newspaper printing & distribution were curtailed by the strike.
