Me: OH NEAT! You have factbooks. I loved these in high school.
CISO: High school?
Me: Oh yeah. Great reading. [begins flipping through one on Kazakhstan]
The result of my training.

Me: If I understand all this right, the key's to have no shame.
CISO: Hmm?
Me: If I react to blackmail material with "Those pics are bitchin'. Can I have one to send my mom?" they have none.
CISO: That...yes, but no.
Me: No shame = rock solid clearance.

last year, we stumbled upon chicago factbooks - the only source of historic chicago rent data, going back to 1930. without the resources for a larger digitization project, we took the simplest approach: manual data entry. once we adjusted the rents for inflation, the facts really came to life… 🧵

ive known about vitamin A poisoning since I was like 7, because the polar bear liver incident was in one of my silly like thousand page illustrated factbooks that I had as a kid. That anyone in actual medicine could overlook it is baffling. But hes not in medicine, just a hobby crank that got hired

So if they published factbooks about race and the like, saying that there was no scientific foundation for racism, Unesco scientists thought they could help contribute, in whatever limited way, to global peace

Yep, David's right: FSU received 22,450 applications for Fall 2005; it received 76,748 applications in fall 2024. It took me 30 seconds to find this information.

At 9 I had read like, two whole dictionaries, an encyclopedia, a medical textbook, two of the Alan Quatermain novels, multiple trivia Factbooks, the Murphy's Law books, reader's digest books,

Obsessively read anything I could, much of which was loaded with the authors' political opinions
Oh yeah man, that’s cool

They're killing the CIA World Factbooks?!

Dear gods, I hope they're all backed up onto Wikisource already

When I was in high school > 30 years ago, I remember reading passages from some CIA World Factbooks at the library to get short historical overviews of some countries.

You might assume that these contained political biases, but overall I thought that the writing tried to be objective and factual.

we kinda grew up thinking búvár (and kolibri) books were like normal, turns out they were very much the exception: high quality factbooks with a clear vision, an easy-to-grasp structure, aimed at kids and teenagers

i'm sure that's where my love of random, unconnected facts originates from

So #NationStates is down down, so I guess it *is* a good time to write factbooks and shit

I'm trying to think what kind of food piping plovers would enjoy, assuming they you know, are society members and stuff.

Any ideas, @tinylongwing.bsky.social ?

Wooo #NationStates is back online! Time to have realized I wrote no factbooks! Oops!

Nice one. I loved the *idea* of dingos as a kid reading factbooks at school. But our neighbours (at about the same age) had a blue heeler who terrified me every time I came round. I might have softened some if I knew it was part dingo...

😑

Not like this.

Like, even if an outcome may have positives, the process under the Regime is so fucked as to overwhelmingly negate any positives in most cases.

That said, CIA factbooks wasn’t on my radar & I don’t have specific commentd.

There is no way those Factbooks were not also archival. NARA must have a complete set.

I have to explain this to my wife, who missed those years... I did a book report on the Chrysalids, set in post apocalyptic where I grew up.

Totally normal to trot to the library, pull up the CIA factbooks and calculate where the badlands would be in relation to current soviet missile capability-

@simon
Pages of that book saddened dictators for decades.
Although dictators are being ousted not by factbooks but other means, but even just making dictators sad a bit is better than licking their boots.

I'm about a chapter in and am appreciating that it takes a narrative approach instead of a strictly observational one.

It's a nice change from factbooks that give the bare minimum of details.

The collection of factbooks - www.nationstates.net/nation=rhanu... You'll find the entry covering Rhanukhan's calendar about halfway down, but feel free to enjoy reading about other aspects of my culture and history also. I've been playing for 20 years, so plenty of lore has emerged ^_^

Indeed.

I will say, I’m loving the cutting satirical responses over on the non-factbooks…
