How fast does a muscle lose its strength during hard exercise? With Maximilien Bowen, Pierre Samozino, Mylène Vonderscher and Baptiste Morel, we proposed one mathematical model for steady, all-out and ramp efforts, in the Journal of Theoretical Biology (2024). 🧵 #ExercisePhysiology

Measured with ASL, a technique that magnetically tags your own blood as contrast.
The study is framed around cognitive fatigue & went hunting for fatigability - the idea that performance progressively decays during a demanding task as you run out. It didn't find that.

Muscular fatigability
Abnormal muscular fatigability is the dominant clinical feature of the disease. It has been suggested by Dr David Wilkie that this phenomenon might result from damage to mitochondria. Parish (1974) also considered that 'there is a prolonged metabolic disorder in

I also have s fibro diagnosis, but I suspect my pain is downstream of the ME biology issues. I have found low dose naltrexone helpful for that pain.

It doesn't help my muscle fatigability...

Looking at ladder climb function authors noticed fatigability in the male mice compared to female mice. While the results authors report fit with previous reports, I am not impressed with the study and the analysis.

Hm. "We observed no changes in objective fatigability as assessed by fatigue ratios as well as recovery ratio in either group." Plus the huge problem that a third of participants dropped out. it's hard for "intention-to-treat" to mitigate such a large LTFU.

power training shortens motor unit contraction time, strength training buffs maximal strength, and endurance training reduces fatigability. disuse is bad for all three.

motor units are recruited from weakest to strongest. when all motor units are engaged, they fire faster to give an extra boost.
