Gita Salden leads the Financial Expertise Centre
The Financial Expertise Centre (FEC) has appointed a new chair. As of July 3, 2026, Gita Salden has taken over this leadership role. She was previously the Director of Supervision at the Dutch National Bank. Salden succeeds Laura van Geest, who led the organization for several years. The FEC is a special partnership that brings together different government authorities. Their main goal is to protect the financial system from crime by sharing knowledge and working together closely. In her new role, Salden wants to focus on effective cooperation between public and private partners. The partnership includes banks, police, and tax authorities. By sharing information, these organizations aim to act against financial crimes more effectively. Niels Obbink, the Director-General of the FIOD, will take over Salden’s former role as vice-chair of the council. Together, they will continue to improve the integrity of the Dutch financial sector.

Proposed updates for financial regulations in the Caribbean Netherlands
The Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) are proposing important updates to financial rules in the Caribbean Netherlands. These changes are necessary because the current regulations have not been updated for several years and no longer match recent laws or modern business practices. By updating these guidelines, the authorities aim to provide clearer expectations for companies operating in the region. This will ensure that businesses better understand their legal obligations regarding their operations and risk management. All market participants are encouraged to share their feedback on these proposals during the official consultation period. Interested parties can submit their responses starting June 26, 2026, until August 28, 2026. After this period, the regulators will publish a final decision.

AFM clarifies rules for accountant influence in audit firms
The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) has released new guidance regarding the Audit Firms Supervision Act. The rules, known as Articles 16 and 16b, focus on the role of accountants within their firms. It is essential that accountants maintain a central position to ensure they always act in the public interest. This update follows a consultation process with audit firms, investors, and legal experts. The goal is to provide clear instructions, especially for firms that work with external private equity investors. The AFM wants to ensure that accountants have enough power to resist financial pressures from outside parties, keeping their professional integrity intact. All audit firms are expected to organize their internal structures to follow these legal principles. By providing more examples and detailed explanations, the AFM aims to create a consistent standard for the industry. This helps maintain trust and quality in financial reporting across the Netherlands.

Financial Institutions Must Improve Checks on Politically Involved Clients
The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) is asking financial companies to improve how they check politically exposed persons (PEPs). These people hold important political jobs and might be more vulnerable to bribery or corruption. A recent study shows that many firms use a general method that does not look at individual risks. This can cause problems and even lead to unfair treatment. The AFM explains that every PEP is different. Companies should not treat everyone the same or judge them only by their nationality. It is also important for firms to use the right definitions and up-to-date lists of names. Although many businesses use computer tools to help them, the companies themselves stay responsible for the final checks. Finally, the study highlights that employees need better training. Simply having a general diploma is often not enough to understand the complex rules about money laundering and terrorism financing. By investing in better knowledge and clear internal rules, financial firms can help keep the economy safe from crime and follow the law correctly.
