@vdoellgast.bsky.social & co-authors describe how we see a process of “AI-enabled fissuring” in which the political economy & technical affordances of AI have created a “new spatial division of AI labor” that builds on the trends highlighted in the 2020 Arise investigation. doi.org/10.54394/voq...

My feeling is that the UK is fissuring. We have experienced crises in different ways in our different nations and even within. The State is not fit for purposeand imposes dysfunction from the centre. Pressure is building. It wont hold for ever. Eventually a crisis will arrive that proves too much.

This article hits on an important trend: the tech industry has long relied on contract labor (& the inequities that result).

“AI layoffs” may provide additional cover for what’s really AI-enabled fissuring and an increased conversion of full time employment to contract and outsourced labor.
Companies are refilling positions they eliminate due to AI — sometimes with cheaper workers, sometimes with contractors. It's a trend that could help companies save money and strip workers of benefits and job security. And it's very hard to quantify.
