A magical evening rockpooling with UV torches at Marazion last night. We succeeded in finding a few Snakelocks Anemones - their fluorescence is spectacular!

Fluoresence is overrated.

This little fluoresence microscope we have is great! I don't even have to manually change filter cubes to do overlay images!

Broader than expected Gal4 expression patterns often complicate tissue-specific CRISPR experiments. This nice paper uses FLP/FRT to map Gal4 activity. Let me show you a reporter we are using to turn CRISPR edits into fluoresence. (1/n)

I hope this paper gets the attention it deserves in the #Drosophila community! Many common "tissue-specific" Gal4 driver lines may have more off-target expression than originally reported. Behold this table and weep for your favorite Gal4. doi.org/10.1002/dvg....

Not all microscopy images turn out great. Nevertheless, they can still be cool. This one definitely has an abstract art vibe. 🖼️

Mito axonal transport (part of my PhD project) is awesome! Keep in mind that the mitos appear larger than they are due to the exaggeration by fluoresence. Other cargos can move around them (including other mitos). Look at cryo-ET to see how mitos take up space in crowded situations

The newest trial on the block is open.
The first ever randomised trial for children with cancer having surgery to see if fluoresence makes it easier, better and safer.
Run by @unibirmingham.bsky.social CRCTU
And funded by the amazing @littleprincesses.bsky.social

International clinical trial to test the use of dye during children’s cancer surgery
Testing whether a dye called Indocyanine Green (ICG) can help surgeons identify tumours and lymph nodes during surgery.

I used to make UV fluorescent paintings for nightclub events. This photo is from an event at Landmark in Bergen.

For scale, the biggest painting is 1.5 x 1.2 meters, so this whole exhibit is around 3,5 m across

This is fluoresence, not reflection. The caterpillar absorbs the UV and re-emits something in our visible spectrum. So in theory, it may function as a defence against predatory birds that can see in the UV spectrum.

"Rocks in the shape of skulls aren't necessarily evil," Chalco says, "you should see some of the jewellery you can get in the city."

Ikora gives her a flat look. "It was glowing."

Chalco chews thoughtfully on a dumpling. "Fluoresence?"

"And whispering," Ikora says.

"Hm..."Whispering things are

I took this pair of photos of several Pertusarias a while back. (They may vary somewhat, this was just looking to see what would happen.) IDs checked by microscopy of spores etc.

Left, Pertusaria hymenea; top, Pertusaia coralliza; right, Pertusaria leioplaca maybe; bottom, Pertusaria pertusa

Hi! My name is Andrea and I'm an artist from Norway. I usually make drawings using micron pens and ink & brush, but I've also done UV fluorescent paintings for nightclub events
