#gAI
I don't want to read, use, cite or think with people who use gAI in their work.
I really encourage disclosures, so we can make those informed choices.
So, you disclose yr AI use to a publisher. They decide it’s w/in the bounds of acceptability. Your manuscript is invited, peer reviewed, board approved, published—w/ your use now disclosed in your acknowledgments. All above board, it seems. But what do yr readers think? Colleagues? T&P committee?

And yes, Im really angry after a peer reviewer likely fed my unpublished manuscript into an LLM to generate a review and didn't disclose it to the press. Dishonest and unethical behavior is what gAI encourages and breeds.

This is in part an ideology problem: OpenAI was a weird group of LWers who concluded (correctly!) that they could create a general artificial intelligence just by scaling up transformers as hard as possible (tho actual GAI is not a god, which is why they refuse to admit they have GAI).
Totally agree. It still boggles my mind why they let him go with the elevator pitch of “we’re gonna let this thing take all your jobs, & the vast majority of you will be a permanent underclass!”

& somehow they still haven’t gotten him to shut up.

AND to anyone who thinks this is uncharitable, untenable, or not useful, you're very welcome to stick to your own inclinations and ethics re gAI use.
And I will stick to mine.

Perhaps you should restrict your predictions of revolutions to your own fields. Because all I see in my field so far: students using gAI to cheat on a catastrophic scale; AI destroying trust between faculty and students; and reviewers feeding unpub work
into LLMs out of sheer laziness.
Two things are true:

1. Claims about AI capabilities are overblown
2. AI has completely revolutionized software development, and will do the same to many other fields

I'm a software developer by trade. I'm going to attempt to explain what this revolution feels like "from the inside".

In the style of the beloved series "Midnight Diner," "Moonlit Golden-Gai" presents a nostalgic mosaic of Japanese society through the stories of the regulars at a tiny bar in Shinjuku's nightlife district.
‘Moonlit Golden-Gai’: A director’s love letter to Shinjuku’s bar district
Shinji Nishiki’s debut feature finds humor, nostalgia and unexpected family ties among the regulars of a tiny Tokyo bar.

Man all the news about etsy gave me bad vibes like they dont really benefit from pushing GAI off their platform, but I couldn't place my finger on it. this makes so much more sense...

talked about AI in healthcare contexts in my gAI class today and wow the lack of disambiguation between gAI and other kinds of actual helpful AI in health care situations is really striking in the review articles and policy papers. Once again had several students VERY mad about the state of things.

The ideology around GAI is that it will basically instantly take over the world by being extremely fucking smart and I have some bad news about how well being merely very very smart lets you take over the world (ie not very).

But the point is, they really think they can make their own Omnissiah.

I'd have felt more hopeful about this before LLM's and gAI were released onto the greater internet.
