How big is the gas industry in Australia? Well, that depends on what you're measuring. 🤔

How much profit it makes? Big. Really big. 🐳
How much tax it pays? Small. 🐥
How many people it employs? Tiny. 🪰

The gas industry’s charade is over.

Australians know we have plenty of gas and excessive exports are the problem.

72% of Australians realise cutting exports is the way bring down energy bills, and just 28% think we need new gas fields.

“there is no gas shortage in Australia” #auspol #governance #gasindustry #pricegauging
Amidst 'textbook astroturfing' by the gas industry, let's remember the facts. The gas industry:

🟠 Exports over 80% of Australia’s gas
🟠 Gets over half the gas they export royalty-free
🟠 Doesn't pay any PRRT on the gas they export
🟠 Price gouges us for our own gas
'Textbook astroturfing': Coalition pollster working with gas campaign
The Coalition's internal pollster is helping orchestrate a campaign to boost public support for the gas industry ahead of the federal election in what has been described as "textbook astroturfing".

Kevin Gallagher has claimed it’s a ‘myth’ that Australia gets less from its oil and gas resources than countries like Norway and Qatar, despite figures showing the two nations reap substantially more from comparable LNG exports.

Our governments are already caving in to pressure from the gas industry to export our domestic gas reserves.

90% of WA's gas is exported or used for export.

We don't have a gas shortage problem. We have a gas export problem.

#auspol The big gas rip-off. Taxing students more than corporations
For how much gas is exported from WA, you would think that the people of WA would be reaping the rewards 🤔

Turns out, NO ROYALTIES are paid on 73% of the gas exported from WA.

🚫No royalties = gas being given away for FREE

Australia Institute research shows the gas industry pays ZERO royalties on more than half the gas exported from Australia.

What’s the point of increasing gas exports for the Australian government and the Australian people? With the current gas tax legislation, it’s pointless.

It is very clear the duopoly of Australian political incumbents are only working for the interests of private enterprise. In my opinion they are in breach of their oath of office.

"You’re right it’s an absolutely #hugeindustry. It’s not a big employer, though. It doesn’t pay much tax. Doesn’t pay much in royalties, & the profits go offshore.
So I don’t know why we’re not going to get rid of the #gasindustry in Australia.”

A reminder that gas is NOT a vital industry to Australia – if anything, it COSTS the Australian economy.

Australia Institute research shows a 25% tax on gas exports could solve the gas crisis – and raise $17 billion every year.

Why is the gas industry notorious for paying so little tax, despite making billions in revenue?

The gas giants that export Australia's gas are meant to pay Petroleum Resources Rent Tax.
But it raises less money than students pay in HECS.
It's time the gas industry started paying its fair share. #auspol #climate
