The protector deity Begtse Chen, also known as Chamsing (English: the Great Coat of Mail. Sanskrit name: Prana Atma). Colloquially Begtse is known as red Mahakala and ranks relatively high in the Sakya protector pantheon of Wisdom Deities. The protector was later adopted and incorporated into the Gelug School of Tsongkapa and subsequently became popular in Mongolia - predominantly following the Gelug tradition since the 17th century. There are a few Gelug traditions and regional monastic centers that hold Begtse to be a worldly protector deity. The majority of the art objects in the gallery below were created within a Gelug context and many of them are of Mongolian origin.

The Second Gelug Monlam Festival was held at Nalanda Monastery in France from March 11-15, 2025. Lama Zopa Rinpoche had expressed the wish to bring this special tradition to the West & the geshes & monks at Nalanda made that wish a reality.

I've wrestled between it and just straight secular humanism off and on, but the last year or so has settled it: I'm definitely a convert to Buddhism, in a pretty academic vein. I've gone to a local lay group for Thich Nhat Hanh intermittently, but think I'll visit the local Gelug Tibetan center soon

The Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery lies at an elevation of c. 3,330 m in Shangri-La County, Yunnan Province, China. It was founded in 1679 by the great Tibetan Fifth Dalai Lama, Nawang Lozang Gyatso (1617 - 1682), who unified Tibet, built the Potala Palace in Lhasa and pursued good relations with the Chinese Qing Dynasty. The Sumtsenling Monastery was built during the reign of the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi (ruled 1662 - 1722) and follows the Gelug (aka Yellow Hat) School of Tibetan Buddhism. The event I went to (that had FREE TIBET signage and such) was not even with cultists, their church is legitimate affiliated with the Gelug lineage, but the average age of the participants was perhaps 70? So similar issue I suspect
