Portrait of Mrs. Andrew Reid (Harriet Gildart) by George Romney (British) - Oil on canvas / c. l786–1788 - Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth, Texas) #womeninart #portrait #art #oilpainting #womensart #georgeromney #artwork #kimbellartmuseum #britishartist #romney #portraitofawoman #grandmanner #bskyart
This "grand manner" portrait represents Harriet Gildart, the granddaughter of Richard Gildart, M.P., who was twice mayor of Liverpool. The sitter married the famous brewer of London stout, Andrew Reid, and raised nine children. Harriet’s elegant and shapely form is fashionably elongated as she leans upon a stone pedestal. The upper portion of her hair was altered, probably by another artist, and is dressed in a style later than the date of the portrait. Her gaze is slightly downcast, conveying a sense of introspection and thoughtful contemplation. Her graceful, cross-legged pose and idealized features reflect the Neoclassical style popular during the late 18th century, implying a meditative, elevated state of mind, while the pale blue silk sash and white gown, flowing like the small waterfall that streams into a brook behind, emphasizes her harmony with the natural landscape. The dates of sitting for Mrs. Reid’s portrait are recorded in Romney’s diaries, which note that she made half of the payment in March of 1786, and that her husband paid the second half two years later. Known for his refined and elegant manner, George Romney enjoyed the highest reputation among British portraitists after Reynolds and Gainsborough. He was the most fashionable artist of his day, painting many leading society figures – including his artistic muse, Emma Hamilton, mistress of Lord Nelson. After a stay in Italy in 1773–75, where he made drawings after the antique and old masters such as Raphael, his career flourished and he adapted the compositions of these prototypes to portraits in the grand manner.

The sketch, believed to be nearly 300 years old, was found by an anonymous dumpster diver who initially had no idea of its historical significance.

Speaking as a fan of deconstruction, perhaps we should all periodically rummage through a bin, just to see what we might find?

A Stanhope commissioned Romney to freeze his children in white linen and proper stillness. Romney gave them motion - that arm pointing somewhere urgent, a hat tilted like adventure.

Two children in white dresses painted by George Romney: the larger child sits elevated wearing a wide-brimmed grey hat and points to the right, while the smaller child leans against a dark piece of furniture looking in the same direction, both illuminated against a near-black background.
