Thanks Gilles! Used ggmosaic in R for the chart grammar, with a manual geom_text() layer built from pre-computed tile centroids for the labels. Everything else is ggplot2 + ggtext.

My strategy of waiting to upgrade to new R version until I have an error I don't want to troubleshoot pays off again. I get to use ggtext and also live out another few quarters in ignorance of whatever namespace 'xfun' is.

It's a fairly manual process at the moment. The lines are just geom_segment, and the annotations are using ggtext (which does the formatting/wrapping/alignment quite automatically)

Because I'm ranting... Please figure out how to replace "_" with " " in your taxa names. Then figure out how to italicize them. Not sure how difficult this is to do in Prism, but it's pretty straightforward with stringr/ggplot2/ggtext in R. How do plots like this appear in journals with 20 JIFs?
