Chimaeras, also known as ghost sharks, are ancient cartilaginous fish that diverged from sharks and rays around 400 million years ago. These enigmatic creatures possess a distinctive appearance, featuring large eyes, pale translucent skin, and a rat-like tail. Their snouts are equipped with electroreceptors that help detect prey hidden in the seabed, such as crabs, worms, and sea urchins. Unlike true sharks, chimaeras have three pairs of tooth plates for crushing hard exoskeletons and continuously grow these structures throughout their lives. They inhabit deep ocean environments, typically between 200 and 2,600 meters, and are found in all oceans except polar regions. Reproduction involves males using a retractable organ called a tenaculum to mate with females. Despite their elusive nature, chimaeras face conservation threats due to overfishing, with one-third of shark, ray, and chimaera species at risk of extinction. Their venomous spines can pose dangers to deep-sea fishermen, and their mysterious biology continues to intrigue scientists.

Marine scientists have discovered a record number of new species living in the depths of the world's oceans over the past year.
