in Music Theory Online).

To me, this actually gives music (and music theory) even greater power to connect us by letting us practice empathy. Now, we get to hear from another culture's perspective, which is so powerful.

Yes! I'm girlinbluemusic there. Haven't really talked about the PhD experience there, mostly music theory and also tips on using Obsidian, but happy to share my experience! Anything in particular you're interested in hearing about?

“No musical phenomenon, however familiar, can be exhausted by a single theoretical paradigm. As an entailment to this conviction, if we wish to illuminate a phenomenon as brightly as possible, we will do well to bring multiple theoretical searchlights to bear on it.” —Steve Rings, *Tonality and Transformation* (2011) In non-academic speak: we need more than one theory or point of view to truly explain any musical phenomenon. If we truly want to understand what is happening in a piece of music, or even in a single moment of a single piece of music, we need to come at it from different angles and perspectives. When we communicate different perspectives and perceptions with each other in a musical community, that is also a practice of empathy. We get to try on other ways of hearing, which helps us to appreciate the ways others see and hear the world and creates spaces where everyone’s experiences are valid and important. Without those perspectives we won’t be able to truly understand what music is and does. And reaching out for other perspectives brings us all closer together. Music is a community act, after all.

It is a privilege to act on your curiosity.
I forget this a lot.
It's my responsibility as an academic who can afford to do research to bring what I find to the world (but of course while balancing my own well-being).
