Today’s Sampson Lab Dictionary word: glomerulus — a tiny but powerful filter inside the kidney that helps clean the blood and start the process of making urine.

Small structure, big job.

Our first fellowship interview day of the season started off right, with 2nd year fellow Dr. Paola Gudiño giving Renal Rounds on HIV and the kidney. Tat & gp160, TGFβ-driven matrix remodeling, mesangial apoptosis, and Sidekick-1 in the glomerulus!

The combination of hematuria, proteinuria, and casts on a UA is considered “nephritic sediment”. The presence of the sediment helps to localize the pathology to the glomerulus.

Clinicopathological features and outcomes of glomerular microangiopathy: a retrospective cohort study
Glomerular microangiopathy (GMA) is a group of diseases characterized pathologically by thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) changes in the glomerulus without detectable microthrombi or intima edema of...

4/Why does a liver virus hurt the kidney? The link is largely immunological. The isolation of immune complexes in the kidney suggests the pathogenesis has an immune-complex basis — antigen + antibody deposits that lodge in the glomerulus. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14988643/
Hepatitis B virus-associated nephropathy - PubMed
A direct causal association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and the development of nephropathy remains controversial. Epidemiological studies have shown that chronic carriage of HBV in some ...

Felis glomerulus. Jedná se o druh častý, dalo by se říci až hojný, zejména v oblastech se sedacími vaky, a vyznačující se typickým vzhledem.
