Arriving after the triumphs Music From Big Pink and their self-titled second album, the group was balancing their craft with the fraying edges of fame, literal exhaustion and some personal tensions. The album didn't receive the rapturous response those first two albums but does show a soon-to-be legendary band adapting. Look at the liner notes and you'll see the engineer in the studio is a guy with a bright future ... Todd Rundgren.

It's produced by legendary engineer Glyn Johns and his influence is all over the album. He recorded the rhythm section and guitars mostly live and that avoids the "date-stamped" sound of pop. CSN asked Benmont Tench of The Heartbreakers to lend some Hammond B3 organ work and that, along with Ethan Johns' drumming and the acoustic guitar work give the album an authentic, rootsy sound.
