Me: oh hey I'm in DC for less than 24 hours, maybe I should go to the air and space museum now that I'm in my plane era!
GMaps: "Smithsonian Air and Space Museum/Lockheed Martin IMAX Theater"
Me: ...
Me: *sigh*

With every such announcement, Trump ensures that in the years after he leaves office, his name will be scrubbed from memorials to decent & heroic Americans, and instead attached to mental hospitals, prisons, toxic landfills, Russian cities (GMaps), outhouses and the like.

I switched to MapQuest when Apple and Google bent the knee over Lake Ontario. I don’t like MQ as much as GMaps as a navigation tool, but at least I know I’m not supporting sycophants. I’ll live with the occasional errant directions, it’s a small price to pay.

#googlemaps has become essentially useless for the few things I would check on there that CoMaps/OSM often lacks (hours, menu photos) because now, you can't see those thing without logging in.

And, of course, I have no #google account.

i love when gmaps takes you the “back road between river and behind huge industrial buildings” alley route when you are on foot ☠️ will not be going back that way

I've tested Comaps to avoid Gmaps. The best alternative so far. codeberg.org/comaps

No 1 e agora no 2 turno, Olho Vivo da Prefeitura SP, que permite ver o trajeto dos ônibus pelo GMaps, está desligado. Ontem tudo funcionava normalmente.

It sucks that it's the default. I love OSM but there are so many convenient features with gMaps making it hard to ignore.

I always see if I can avoid it if possible though 🙂

I have never tried them for cycling directions but by god anything has to be better than gmaps, it is constantly trying to send me the wrong way down 1-way streets and on roads that are ABSOLUTELY NOT OK for bikes

it was not like this even one year ago

Hi,
Another weird GMaps change is not showing what the next turn or offramp is until it’s almost too late??
Please show what the next turn or offramp will be and how far it will be as soon as that is possible on the directions display!

It’s distracting as a driver to not have this info earlier!

I get that satellite image data can sometimes be well over 2 years old on Gmaps but the thing that threw me when I was looking into it nearly a year ago is that yhe copyright dates were still updating while the images and data for businesses, schools, hospitals and places of worship were not.

so I'm gonna be up in Maryland at the office for $WORK and I look on gmaps for what has changed in the area. There's a pizza place, and I check out the menu:

* "supreme pizza", "margherita pizza" cool, cool ...
* "buffalo chicken pizza" yep, cool
* "beef gyro pizza" wait
* "chicken […]

I love that Google offers me this but doesn't actually block any of these ads. I tried to report the scam "download the new Gmaps!" ad and Google refused to take it down. Seriously wtf.

I think Dave here is lying. He claims that his commute into Cardiff from his home in Ynysddu is a 62 mile round trip.
GMaps says that it's 18 miles each way.=

Google bussness hours and reviews are finally getting SOME sort of competition
submitted by OppositeMeaning to degoogle 56 points | 34 comments # Why people don’t wanna switch from Gmaps (maybe at best a client app): * Gmaps has a monopoly on the navigation industry because of one thing: Bussness hours and reviews. It has been that way for years, and the only real alternative for this is Vela Maps, which is vibe-coded (or AI-made), until now # Competition arrives * A new project, called “Mangrove Reviews”, has been quietly growing on the scenes and has been doing revoews for the FOSS industry, giving Google Maps SOME sort of competition, even if it’s not to the level of straight rivalry * This service, tho, isn’t enough to turn the tides. However, navigation services like MapComplete and CoMaps have been slowly working with them to finally bring convenience for navigation for the more newer or unfamiliar de-googlers # Is this real competition yet? * We can’t know for sure. As stated in the latest CoMaps article (as of Oct 30th 2026), this is very niche. Competition for certain monoloplies have varying levels of success. Godot has succeeded on rivaling other game engines like Unreal or Unity, while attempts at YouTube altermatives like PeerTube only _moderately_ succeeded. Mangrove Reviews, as far as I can tell, seems to be a very new project, so we can’t know for sure. We just gptta hope they succeed # Links and sources: ## Info source: * LemmyPost: vger.to/sopuli.xyz/post/53882964 * Article: www.comaps.app/news/2026-10-27/place-reviews/ ## CoMaps download: * F-Droid: f-droid.org/packages/app.comaps.fdroid/ * IzzyOnDroid: apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/app.comaps * Source code: codeberg.org/comaps/comaps * Website: www.comaps.app ## MapComplete: * F-Droid: f-droid.org/packages/org.mapcomplete/ * Website: mapcomplete.org ## Mangrove: * Website: mangrove.reviews

Love to refuse Wi-Fi scanning every time I use the "focus on my location" button in gmaps. It's good that there are regular dark pattern prompts that I have to deal with every time I use a regular function in an app I use all the time
