My husband has taught human reproduction and development to the Cambridge medics for over three decades. When people start banging on about "only two biological sexes" he starts with "which sex: genetic, hormonal, or gonadal"?

3. Anatomical and Gonadal Differences

Intersex people may have ambiguous genitalia, mixed gonadal tissue, or internal reproductive structures (e.g., uterus and testes) that don't fit standard male/female models. 6/

MAJOR-GENERAL Stanley enters, sings:

I am the microplastics found in every human testicle
I come from sources various, imported and domestical
Although I am unlikely to eventuate sterility
There’s no way I can be good news for gonadal fertility

Actually, there have been cases of people with XY chromosomes getting pregnant, though it's exceedingly rare:

Podría estar estudiando los mercados, pero acá estoy como una boluda leyendo sobre historia de la investigación del desarrollo gonadal.

It doesn’t look at:

1) Chromosomes
2) Gonadal sex - whether the infant has ovaries, testes, undescended testes, both or neither
3) internal reproductive organs
4) hormonal/endocrine sex
5) developmental trajectory
6) medical intervention - ambiguous genitalia still have an assignment

A huge well done to @IsabelleStevant.genomic.social.ap.brid.gy, Meshi and Elisheva who spearhead this project!

Which biology exactly?
Is it genetic? Hormonal? Or gonadal?

Very cool results but this is not about birds changing sex (like wrasses) - it’s about having gonadal and morphological traits that don’t align with chromosomal sex.
Number 7 in our year-end countdown of most popular @royalsocietypublishing.org papers takes a look at a twist in avian biology: up to 6% of individuals in five wild bird species naturally switch sex, a discovery that could reshape conservation strategies. https://bit.ly/4qihFCL

Abstract. The ability to unequivocally identify the sex and reproductive status of individuals is crucial across many fields of study. Recent evidence indi

“genetic, hormonal, or gonadal?”

they really ought to warn cis women of its effects on their gonadal tissue

Yes! My cousin, a neurobiologist who studies sex differences in RATS says “what exactly do you mean? Genetic sex? Hormonal sex? Gonadal sex?” And that’s just in rats. Imagine how much more complicated it is in humans!

Did you know many women are genetically men?
Conservatives can’t acknowledge sexuality & gender are complex and leave people alone.

Not all phenotypes & sex chromosomes match!

1. Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome

2. Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia

3. 5-Alpha Reductase Deficiency

4. Swyer Syndrome (Gonadal Dysgenesis)

5. Swyer Syndrome (de la Chapelle Syndrome / XX Male)

6. Mixed Gonadal Dysgenesis (MGD) & Ovotesticular DSD

Which biological sex though, genetic, hormonal or gonadal?

I have the same opinion about the gonadal placement on the male anatomy...

False!

We are undifferentiated until 7 weeks in utero.

There is nothing female about it until gonadal differentiation
January 21, 2025 at 11:57 AM
A person born without gonads (gonadal agenesis), or with gonadal tissue that does not differentiate into functioning testes or ovaries (gonadal dysgenesis), may be considered neither male nor female if these nonsensical definitions are applied.

In my case, the chromosomal DSD caused a gonadal DSD which caused a hormonal DSD which led to varied expressions through my life. *none* of that is in any way described purely by the original DSD.
