"Gopping" is British army slang for filthy, disgusting or unpleasant. Used for everything from weather to food to the cleanliness of rooms. Etymologically unrelated to GOP as far as i know, so it's just a fortuitous coincidence

It's a very useful word. You will be unsurprised to learn that the British army has a range of ways to describe being out in bad weather. I would say that "honking" is slightly worse than "gopping".
