Vesper sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus) – From the Instagram archive… Not a common sparrow to see around west Michigan, but there are a few fairly reliable places to see/hear them each summer.

Taking a quick break from the screen, really enjoying this combination on the edge of the pond, in our exotic courtyard garden.

Acorus gramineus 'Ogon', Impatiens omeiana 'Sango', Viola labradorica 'Purpurea', and in the background Iris graminea.

Acorus gramineus 'Ogon' is one of those rare evergreen plants that manages to look fresh all year round. Love the way it catches the slightest glimmer of sun in winter.

Genetic and morphological analyses confirm the identity of H. gramineus and distinguish it from its close relative H. nzingae.

One useful diagnostic feature? The number of ventral scale rows. Dorsal colouration is too variable for reliable identification.

Agreed on P. gramineus. I saw lots of that in the summer.
Were the submerged leaves dentate at all? Just curious.

I hauled out to Uji today on the train to go shopping in person at the aquatic plant specialty store. Mostly marginal plants to stabilize the shore: variegated cultivars of Acorus gramineus + calamnus, variegated cattail, lesser water plantain, fringed water-lily, water bacopa, and pearl weed.

The variation in aquatic plants between their submersed and emergent leaves is fascinating. Variable pondweed (Potamogeton gramineus) is a good example. Delicate leaves in the water, tough leathery leaves at the surface. (This photo has a inflorescence (flower stalk) thrown in for good measure too!)
