i think the issue is that writing tend to be the least important thing for game devs so you end up getting pastiche or pulp plots because people are focused on graphics or gameplay
My hard-to-swallow pill is that almost every game that's supposed to have some great story really suffers when you play it after having also read books. Mass Effect was like this for me--just a completely unoriginal pastiche of any number of SF novels over the last few decades.
