Tracking 9,419 meals eaten by 173 stem cell transplant patients: sweets and sugars eaten during antibiotic treatment predicted worse gut microbiome disruption, with lower diversity and more Enterococcus. In mice, added sucrose increased and prolonged that bloom.

🍬 Sugar undermines antibiotics

In 158 patients on antibiotics, more sweets meant worse damage to gut bacteria, with one harmful bug taking over. Mice given sugar alongside antibiotics saw that bug expand further and longer.

What they can digest is limited by the short length of their digestive tract. So if you were to provide all the basic nutrients that would be in meat, pre-digested and still palatable to a feline, you could in theory get away doing that. The microbiota of their gut though might still not be happy.

Sugary foods during in-hospital antibiotic treatment for hematologic cancers may disrupt the gut microbiome. Each extra 3.5 oz of sweets was linked to ~24% lower microbiome diversity, potentially increasing infection risk. Applicability to home antibiotic use remains unclear.
