We looked at the relative importance of habitat and climate in boreal biodiversity patterns across space, time and taxa.

Habitat explains most of biodiversity patterns while patterns between biogeographical regions and years are mainly explained by climate,

Shifting balance between habitat and climate in boreal biodiversity patterns across space, time and taxa - Nature Communications
Climate and habitat jointly shape species distributions and biodiversity. The authors show that habitat is the main driver of boreal terrestrial biodiversity, while the relative roles of climate and h...

That echoes the debate in the UK. Different stakeholders approach from different positions: some from a utilitarian angle, wanting usable timber, other from a habitat restoration angle, wanting more biodiversity: some view woodland as a resource, others view it as a natural/native habitat.

Someone: "I'm going palm oil free for the orangutans"

my brain:
don’t say it
don’t say it
don’t say it
don’t say it
don’t say it

Me: "Maybe you could go plant-based too for the dozens of species lost every single day?" 🦧

“…the long-term future of the world’s biodiversity requires fundamental shifts to society, particularly in the food, energy and finance sectors. Agriculture is the single largest cause of habitat loss and a major contributor of climate-warming greenhouse gas emissions alongside fossil fuels.”

Yep. I'm very involved with Landcare and there's some incredible tech being developed to capture biodiversity, map it and develop greenprints to plan for effective conservation in fractured habitat.

New research explores the trade-off between warming and land-intensive mitigation for biodiversity.

Across five integrated assessment models, the study finds that, at the global scale, limiting warming offers greater protection for today's climate refugia.

I agree with both causes, but conflating them weakens rather than supporting them

Biodiversity loss in the UK is driven overwhelmingly by insect decline: pesticides, monoculture farming, loss of meadow habitat, nitrogen deposition, light pollution, weather patterns

🌍Our results reveal contrasting trends: fast life-cycle species are increasing their occupancy, while habitat specialists are increasingly confined to more marginal niches.

These results have important implications for biodiversity conservation under global change.

More than a crop, it’s an ecosystem. 🌱

SAMA^Verte, with Spencer West Biodiversity, is supporting local communities in Shujabad to enhance biodiversity through practical habitat improvements, creating the conditions for nature to thrive alongside farming.

Coupling Habitat Suitability and Human Pressure Unlocks China's Blue Carbon Future
Newswise — Coastal blue carbon ecosystems (CBCEs) occupy the land–sea interface, where sea-level rise, warming, eutrophication, aquaculture, port expansion, fishing, and land-use change converge. These pressures can degrade mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses while also shifting where future suitable habitats may occur. Many conservation assessments remain reactive, fragmented, and blind to cumulative land–sea stressors and future expansion potential. The Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls for protecting at least 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030, yet planners still struggle to reconcile ecological suitability with human pressure. Based on these challenges, or because of these issues, there is an urgent need for in-depth research on integrated, proactive spatial planning for CBCEs. Published (DOI: 10.1016/j.ese.2026.100771) online 26 September 2026 in Environmental Science and Ecotechnology, the study was led by Beijing Normal University with collaborators from China University of Geosciences, Indiana University, and Xiamen University. The team combined maximum entropy (MaxEnt) habitat modeling, land–sea anthropogenic pressure mapping, and systematic conservation planning (SCP) with Marxan. They assessed mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses along China’s coast and designed spatially differentiated protection and restoration strategies. The research offers a scalable planning workflow for coastal nations. The analysis identified potential suitable distribution areas (PSDAs) of 4,188.85...

ProQuest has a particularly bad AI-assist (though the problem might be more a coding thing than an AI thing). ProQuest has a row of search terms that appear under the search box once you've run a search. If you click on the suggested terms, the term will be added to your search but in parentheses

Wetland restoration by the square meter
Be a part of restoring our lost and degraded wetlands, a habitat that has shrunk as it has been drained, straightened and buried.
