Many are (confusingly) referring to record-breaking CA coastal water levels as arising from "king tides" despite only moderate astronomical influence. Instead, main culprit is local sea rise from extreme El Niño event! Actual Nov-Jan king tides will bring *greater* inundation.

New York is raising a whole park up to 10 feet to protect more than 110,000 residents from storm surges and rising seas

The defences are mostly hidden, and should be finished in 2027. Many coastal cities worldwide face the same threat and need funding

Two Navy Veterans, One Flooding District: Why Sea-Level Rise Matters in Kiggans vs. Luria
Early voting is about to close this Saturday in Virginia’s second congressional district, where Republican incumbent Jennifer Kiggans and Democrat challenger Elaine Luria are facing off in a closely watched House race. The candidate who wins the district, which Cook Political Report recently updated from a “toss up” to “lean Democrat,” could have a significant impact on the 2027 Congressional makeup—as well as for the future of military operations. For over a decade, the coastal district, which encompasses Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads and borders Norfolk, has been on the frontline of climate change-induced sea-level rise, experiencing everything from “sunny-day” flooding to significant land sinking (making coastal areas even more vulnerable to flooding). Home to several of the nation’s largest military installations, and adjacent to the world’s largest naval facility Naval Station Norfolk, the region has been a flashpoint for what happens when rising tides potentially jeopardize military readiness. Or, as the Biden administration’s Department of Defense put it, Naval Station Norfolk is a “unique example of how the nation’s defense can be affected by the environment.” In Virginia’s 2nd congressional district, defense issues heavily shape election debates. But climate change sentiment might also play a part in this race,...

Five ways that sea-level rise affects your daily life, even if you live inland
Rising sea levels might seem like someone else’s problem if you live inland. But, even miles from the coast, changing sea levels can affect the food we eat, the goods we buy, the energy we use and the taxes we pay. Global sea levels are predicted to rise by between 28 and 55cm by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced. Sea levels could rise by between 63cm and 1m if emissions stay at very high levels. A rise of more than 2m by 2100 cannot be completely ruled out. Here’s how sea-level rise is already affecting our daily lives and exposing weaknesses in everything from power supplies to infrastructure: 1. Threat to food crops The Fens, which spread across Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, hold 48% of England’s best agricultural land and contribute over 7% of UK agricultural output, including about a third of England’s vegetables. Much of this landscape lies at or below sea level, which leaves it vulnerable to flooding and to contamination with saline water. The land’s productivity depends on an extensive network of drainage channels, pumping stations and flood defences. A breach can destroy crops and leave productive soil unusable for years. As homegrown produce...
