Your 'moment of doom' for Nov. 1, 2026 ~ Dark times.

"instead of seeing the historic loss of polar ice as a climate change alarm bell, global governments and corporations saw it as a dinner bell for new shipping routes, resource extraction and power projection"

What California’s dying sea lions have to do with Tuesday’s election
OPINION: Sick sea lions can’t vote for the ocean, but you can. Vote for politicians who will take climate change seriously.

I'm up in Churchill with @polarbearsinternational.org keeping a close eye on the start of the freeze-up this year. No ice yet, and climate change is pushing this later & later into the season. This means polar bears have to spend more time on land before they can return to the sea ice to hunt seals.

October always brings rapid and dramatic changes to #Arctic environments as winter takes hold. October 2026 status in the latest from the Alaska and Arctic Climate newsletter. #Climate #SeaIce #Snow

Sea ice extent in the Chukchi Sea was lower on Halloween than two weeks prior for only the second time since 1979. Current ice extent is well below 2025 and near the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data. Bering Sea effectively ice free at the end of October, first time since 2020. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce

September is a key month for monitoring #OceanHealth when the #Arctic reaches its minimum #SeaIce extent and #Antarctica reaches its maximum.

Visualising the changing extent of polar sea ice is vital in understanding changes affecting our global ocean.

Antarctic sea ice reaches lowest winter extent on record
Antarctic sea ice has reached its maximum extent after the cold dark winter months. According to the preliminary data from the US National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC), the maximum extent remained...

Antarctic sea ice loss is pushing salt into a deep ocean layer, reversing decades of freshening in just years. Scientists warn this #Antarctic #SeaIce #OceanCirculation #ClimateChange

The warnings are getting louder, but why aren't politicians listening to the scientists?

Attached: 1 image State of the Cryosphere Report 2026 – The Cost of Overshoot Overshooting the 1.5°C #ParisAgreement target will bring large-scale, and in many cases irreversible, impacts from the Earth’s melting #ice sheets, #permafrost, g#laciers, #SeaIce and polar #oceans. This will bring a catalogue of dangerous global risks. Many are already visible today, including the devastating #floods on the #Nepal-China border in August that killed thousands, accelerating sea-level rise that threatens hundreds of millions of people globally and potentially irreversible disruption to the planet’s oceans and weather systems. The State of the Cryosphere 2026: The Cost of Overshoot report was released jointly alongside the #UNEP/ICCI report Overshoot and the Cryosphere: Averting Global Meltdown on November 2, 2026. The two reports set out the global impacts of ice loss with overshoot, exploring which ones are locked in, and how urgent action – especially the transition from #FossilFuels – can still stop or slow the worst of this damage. Overshoot must be kept to the absolute minimum and temperatures returned to below 1.5°C as quickly as possible. Current levels of warming are already unsafe for the #Arctic, the #Antarctic, mountain #glaciers and the polar oceans. State of the Cryosphere 2026 describes new science and observations from the past year, such as Switzerland’s loss of 20% of its glacier ice in the past five years. Other impacts range from accelerating sea-level rise due to rapid ice loss, to increasing water shortages and mountain hazards as glaciers disappear and snow drought conditions spread. Although returning to 1.5°C will slow ice loss, a truly ‘safe’ temperature target for Earth’s ice is now thought to be closer to 1.0°C or even below over the coming centuries. “For decades now, cryosphere scientists have been sounding the alarm: ice matters, and for each rise in CO2, the global impacts from its loss will grow all more devastating. It is high time we listen, and act accordingly.” https://iccinet.org/statecryo26/ https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23478059 #ClimateScience #ClimateCatastrophe #Cryosphere #BudhiGandaki

Two new UN reports warn passing 1.5°C would bring large-scale, often irreversible damage to glaciers, sea ice and permafrost — and a truly safe temperature for Earth's ice may be closer to 1°C.

UN reports warn of large-scale damage to Earth's ice from climate change
Exceeding 1.5C of global warming will have "irreversible" consequences for glaciers, sea ice and the Earth's frozen regions, two U.N. reports warned on Monday, calling for urgent action.

Sea ice extent in the Chukchi Sea hasn't changed much in the past 10 days in OSI SAF data. Water south of the ice edge is still above freezing and south winds have pushed the ice north a bit. Ice extent is still higher than usual but both 2025 and 2021 were higher on Oct 24. #akwx #Arctic #SeaIce
