The ice sheets covering Greenland and Antarctica are already melting about six times faster today than in the 1990s. That rate will only accelerate as the planet warms.

The current rate of warming spells doom for 90% of the world's glaciers. Then what?

Global Mean Sea Level

Global mean sea level rise is caused primarily by two factors related to #GlobalWarming: added water from melting land-based ice sheets and glaciers and the expansion of seawater as it warms.

🧊 Tall ice cliffs retreat faster than models say

Measurements show tall ice cliffs calve faster than models assume. Thinning ice stops a runaway collapse, though, which matters for anyone on a coast.

Empirical constraints on ice cliff calving
When calving cliffs at the margins of Earth’s ice sheets exceed a critical height, runaway retreat may be initiated in a process called the marine ice cliff instability. However, sufficiently tall ice...

Last month saw a very large temperature anomaly gradient between the Weddell Sea region and West #Antarctica. In fact, this was one of the very few places anywhere on the globe with colder than average temperatures in August, especially compared to older baselines (e.g., 1951-1980). Data from ERA5.

New piece on the blog on the new #IMBIE paper. How healthy are the ice sheets?
What is driving their mass change and what do we know now after a half a century of observations by satellites?

Half a century of ice loss: the new IMBIE dataset
A big new community paper has just landed: the IMBIE paper is a big effort to assess the long term health of the ice sheets. What did we find and what does it mean?

“...when #icesheets melt, they contribute to rising global sea levels. And with every additional centimeter of sea-level rise, about 2 to 3 million people are put at risk of annual coastal #flooding.”

Antarctic, Greenland Sheets Have Melted Enough Since the '70s to Cover US in 5 Feet of Ice | Common Dreams
Greenland and Antarctica's ice sheets have lost about 11.3 trillion metric tons, or 12.5 trillion US tons, since the 1970s.
