My most mind-boggling ‘high priest of the crypto cult’ experience was a young man who represented himself as a founder of Cryptoparty to the U.N. (he wasn’t), who we later discovered couldn’t build a placeholder website. He was kicked out of a bunch of hackerspaces for stealing from the communities
