Historically, most bird flu vaccines have concentrated primarily on the hemagglutinin protein. However, researchers here explored whether

Really interesting new paper describing the structure of an H5 hemagglutinin in detail from a research team in Columbia. Apparently, the receptor-binding site of the H5 hemagglutinin is bound by an α-2,3-sialoside that needs to be displaced for binding receptors on cells.
Structure of a zoonotic H5N1 hemagglutinin reveals a receptor-binding site occupied by an auto-glycan
Morano et al. use cryo-EM to visualize the hemagglutinin from H5N1 A/Texas/37/2024 influenza, the strain responsible for the 2024 zoonotic outbreak. They find that the receptor-binding site is bound t...

Viral mutations are very worrying for the prospect of future human spread. A recent study found that a single amino acid mutation allows H5N1 to bind human hemagglutinin (HA) receptors, readily enabling human infection and human-to-human spread.
