Odd computers. I fixed up that computer I posted before, but I'm not done yet! Anyway I made the base in Hexels and made these additions with Illustrator. Inspired very much by some of the work of @mooneysart.bsky.social one day I'll be as good at drawing retro tech as him.

What are people using for pixel art these days? I used Hexels once upon a time and quite liked it, but was wondering if there are some other unique tool or workflows I've missed over the years.

Note: This isn’t the only method to create pixel art with non-square pixels. It’s effective if you want to convert existing art that already uses square pixels.
There are also art programs that support painting with non-square pixels, such as Marmoset Hexels 3!

Process I used for non-square pixels
1. Create pixel art with square pixels 😆
2. Upscale the art. I used the xBR algorithm
3. Paint over to add details (since square pixels cause aliasing)
4. Process with a shader or filter. I used the Filter Forge 12 plugin for Photoshop CS6
5. Done!

yes! i went to their profile and saw the tagged programs
im purely csp + gimp + (other niche or deprecated programs like marmoset hexels) so that was my big question they readily answered via their main post (which tbh is just best practices for selling / releasing brush packs)

I was using Marmoset Hexels since the inception of Roses and lately it's been effectively dead, no linux support and quite frankly hasn't been the greatest for animating sprites so I moved back to traditional pixel art (while still trying to match the old art direction) #gamedev #RosesWillRise (alt)
