I would fucking love to see more music that mixes Japanese folk songs with modern genres that *doesn't* get stuck on the shamisen and koto being the only sound of traditional Japanese music.
The shakuhachi, biwa, sho, and hichiriki exist, you guys. And then some!

Well that was fun, they gave us a go on the wind and percussion instruments.
Turns out my experience with the clarinet helps with making a tune out from a hichiriki even though that one is closer to an oboe.

I'd been trying to track down the name of the Shō and what one looked like for years (its the instrument played by the person on the right, providing the slightly metallic, bagpipe-ish "drone"), because I love how it sounds- esp. in tandem with a Hichiriki as in the example clip-

Sometimes I have to wonder what do my 🇯🇵 colleagues think when they enter my lab.
Sure, I mostly listen to classical music/rock, or folk, but sometimes I also listen to enka, 🇯🇵 audiobooks (e.g. Sōseki's Kusamakura), or honest-to-god gagaku. (I really like the sound of shō and hichiriki.)
