It’s #HillfortsWednesday!

Did you know that there are more than 150 hillforts, hilltop and hillslope enclosures recorded on land cared for by the National Trust?

They're amazing archaeological sites, but also real havens for nature. 🧵

This is the largest known retrogressive thaw slump in the world (Yakutia)! 🧊🔥

It exposes a remarkable sequence of Ice Age permafrost that record interaction of colluvial/eolian/periglacial processes on a hillslope episodically forested during last 650 ka! 😲

Blue remembered hills across the Bassenthwaite valley in the Lake District today from a wet Orthwaite Road. The water on the road is not from rain but from hillslope runoff.

If you are interested in grain size variation across landscapes, please check out this paper by my wonderful collaborator Dr. Tingan Li.

The talk I gave a few weeks ago also highlights his work, if you prefer listening rather than reading 😉

For anyone still unsure whether bracken is out of control in Wales, I refer you to this photo of head-high bracken from a Wednesday exploration of an Iron Age hillslope enclosure..🌱😬

TBH, I was surprised not to encounter any dinosaurs in the undergrowth... 🦖

A new paper (Görüm et al. 2026) describes the 100,000 cubic metre 8 December 2024 landslide on the Güngören hillslope, which killed four people. The landslide was the result of progressive deformation, with final failure triggered by heavy, but not exceptional, rainfall.

Hydrology Paper of the Day @danielepenna.bsky.social on how hillslope trees utilize water from different seasons: water utilization depth and temporal water cycles associated with different residence times, and understanding processes characterized in the eastern Italian pre-Alps by stable isotopes.
Do #trees in different #hillslope positions use different #water #sources in a pre-Alpine #catchment? And is water #uptake mostly related to #summer or #winter #precipitation in this #humid #environment? Find out more in this study led by Giulia Zuecco at Ressi. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Tree rings are amazing! 🌲💍🥰

Here is a 600 yr-old Siberian pine cross section showing no less that 7 scars on the tree side facing the rock cliff upstream! 🔥

All the scars are dated to the year (or season) and are used to build chronicles of different hillslope processes! 📅

It may have wings but it can’t fly (the quail I spooked accidently near by did tho…) this is the winged stemmed Dampiera, #Dampiera alata. It’s a wide ranging southwest species found growing in a variety of habitats, this one growing on a hillslope on lateritic soils.
