It would have been an intentional choice! Himring and Amon Ereb were both very viable options to retreat to. (and yeah, Himring *was* reachable; refugees from Dorthonion, due west of Himlad, reached it. I don't think it was ever cut off from ground lines of communication either.)

In three weeks, I am presenting at the Silmarillion Writer's Guild "Mereth Aderthad" fan convention on the topic, "Love, Grief, and Alliterative Verse in Tolkien's Legendarium". Here's an interview with me they posted as part of the leadup to that event --

I recently got back into one of my OG fandoms; The #Silmarillion. I had forgotten how much #Maedhros' story resonated with me, so I had to draw him. The background is a stained-glass image of his castle at #Himring. I hate that I have to use Glaze and make things look weird, but that's life.
A bust portrait of Maedhros (a character from the Silmarillion), a red haired elf, in a red wool cloak, with a stained-glass winter scene behind him. His expression is intense and serious as he looks into the "camera." He wears a gold brooch with a star of Feanor clasped at his throat. A stained-glass winter scene of a gray castle of Himring amid snow and purple pines. There are twisted, bare trees in the foreground. The sun rises over the mountains behind the castle. This is an unobstructed view of the stained-glass background in the Maedhros portrait.

Maedhros & Maglor; Himring
I´m really proud of this, and the last month helped me feel good about sharing my art again, so here they are :)

#tolkien #jrrtolkien #silmarillion #tolkienart #silmart #maedhros #maitimo #nelyafinwe #maglor #makalaure #kanafinwe #sonsoffeanor #feanorians #noldor
Maedhros is sitting in a wooden ornamental chair with lions at the armrest and star motifs. He is pale with white scars and orange hair that has greying stripes. His hair is braided with two front braids, four smaller ones behind that, and at the end of his head, on big one, with golden rings in it. He is wearing black clothes with white flowers embroidery and a white robe over that has red and gold embroidery, and over that a dark red fur trimmed robe with floral gold embroidery, which folds over his shoulder in white cloth. He has a golden necklace and rings as well as shoulder brooches, and a mirthil/silver right hand, as he rests his head on the left, in a side profile. Maglor is standing at his side and slightly behind him, with a coloured glass window at his back casting light on them. He is wearing grey blue robes, with teal and gold embroidery, and a red overrobe over one slightly darker than his robe. His sash is red with silver embroidery mimicking Maedhros´s white one, which has black thread. Maglor is wearing silver hair clips, earrings, bracelets, necklace, and rings with rubies.

Posting stuff I made for the feanorian week this year
(Didn't complete the whole week but 5 out of 7 is pretty good, right?)

So, here is a Maedhros piece, that's technically an illustration for a story I'm writing

A long quote from the story in alt text
#silmarillion #tolkien #maedhros #himring
The figure he was cutting against the grey stone of the surroundings was striking. His cloak was the same shade of red she was now getting used to, and looked voluminous and heavy with furs, covering his entire right side from shoulder to the sole of his boots, almost touching the ground. Plate armor he wore was mirror-bright and carried intricate designs, that her eyes could not distinguish from such a distance. His hair was laying atop his shoulders in waves, unbound and shockingly red, almost matching the color of the cloak in lowlights, yet streaked with grey in a way she never saw on an elf before. The copper circlet on his brow seemed to almost disappear in it as well, adding bright shine when it caught the light just right. His face was half hidden behind his hair, and Amina would later find it hard to remember his features, except for the intensity of his eyes, shining brighter even than his brother's, as if there was a roaring fire trapped inside them.

Also it probably worked out best that short ficlets were all I had time to write, because there’s a ‘diplomatic roadtrip to Himring’ one there that nearly went haring off down a Celeborn/Maedhros path that would have gobbled up all my writing energy for the other days if I’d let it.
