#histamine
I know a lot of you haters are pro-histamine. But we have to agree the noble anti-histamine is one of the top 20 human innovations ever. One pill and I'm 80% less snotty.

It depends on whether you're more susceptible to histamine liberators or to dietary histamine. (And "high in dietary histamine" is divided into "high in histamine on its own" vs "starts converting histidine into histamine more rapidly when cooked".)

Histamine is found in all foods but there are ways to lower the intake to avoid side effects like migraines.

This “Low Histamine Pasta & Cream Sauce” doesn’t contain offenders like cheese, and it’s completely vegan.

(Our local sushi place does a great selection of raw vegetarian rolls! They are still higher histamine because of the nori (and soy sauce), but I can eat them on a good day and saving them doesn't change the histamine content!)

MCAS and Histamine: Diet isn’t the Only Answer

Often people think of MCAS as only impacting histamine. They adopt a restrictive low histamine diet - but don’t improve.

This article explains why that is and explores other lifestyle modifications and tips to reduce flare ups:

MCAS and Histamine - Diet isn't the ONLY Answer
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome is a beast of a condition that can impact every part of your life. The good news is there are many things you can do on your own to improve symptoms and reduce flares.

spending all my histamine budget for the day on cheese, because cheese is perfect and can never hurt me and any insinuation it is high histamine is a lie
August 29, 2024 at 3:46 PM
Actually, not exactly! I recognize everything you list as commonly accepted to be a histamine liberator even if not high histamine itself. So it's not the histamine content of the food itself, it's that it unlocks the stored histamine your cells haven't disposed of yet and dumps it.

(I thought I had room in the histamine budget and I did not: one woman's story)

Some people are way more sensitive to histamine liberators, because they have a relatively high dietary histamine tolerance budget before they react, so they have more histamine stored in the bucket and when it gets kicked over, it's worse.
December 21, 2025 at 6:00 PM
(I also react significantly less to histamine liberators than high objective histamine content, because most of my supportive medication is "lower reactivity to all histamine exposure" rather than "increase size of histamine bucket to increase reactivity threshold".)

Fuck histamine, all my homies hate histamine
April 20, 2024 at 4:06 AM
A lot of people who are way more sensitive to histamine liberators than the pure objective histamine content of food respond really well to taking DAO (diamine oxidase, the enzyme that breaks down histamine) supplements to speed up the plumbing on their waste management system.

1. The underlying science behind the COVID/antihistamine link

There are two major connections between the SARS-CoV-2 virus and histamine. The first is that the virus uses histamine receptors as a method of cell entry/replication: journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/...
The histamine receptor H1 acts as an alternative receptor for SARS-CoV-2 | mBio
In addition to human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can utilize alternative cofactors to facilitate viral entry. In this study, we discov...

It's histamine! Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS). My exasperated and profane explainer: synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/793547.html Histamine buildup in cooked food is partially bacterial byproducts and partially histidine converting to histamine upon cooking.

It is an antihistamine, it's just a h2 histamine antagonist instead of a h1 histamine antagonist. h1 histamine receptors = sneezing/runny nose, h2 histamine receptors = gastric acid secretion, smooth muscle spasms, vasoconstriction. You need both to chill out the mast cell reaction--
December 22, 2023 at 3:07 AM
Returning to the histamine bucket analogy: instead of reducing the size of the bucket or adding to the contents of the bucket and increasing the risk of a histamine spill that way, histamine liberators just kick over the bucket to spill it no matter what size it is or how full it is.
December 21, 2025 at 6:00 PM
They also found that histamine 2 and 3 receptors don't increase COVID expression, and histamine 4 receptor only weakly increases COVID expression. It's mainly histamine 1, which we have tons of drugs for!!

Antihistamines bind to H1 which then prevent COVID from binding to them!

The updated COVID/histamine link thread because people keep tagging me in to explain it and I keep intending to update the post from 2023 (synecdochic.dreamwidth.org/805203.html) and just not having the capacity because of my own health shit so here is a thread I can pin
