Vancouver's first official lifeguard Joseph Seraphim Fortes in 1905. Affectionately known as 'Black Joe,' he hailed from Trinidad and Tobago. Fortes moved to Vancouver in 1885
Fortes is credited with saving over 100 lives and was a champion swimmer who voluntarily taught children.

You've never heard her name before, but there was once an organization called the Southern Negro Youth Congress where she and her husband Louis Burnham met in the 1930s.

She's one of those radical Black activists whose name is only known in revolutionary spaces.
